By principle, all institutional speech is liable to a scientific approach, which should also emphasize the common knowledge, and try to find out the rational meaning of the application act.

The aim of the present study was to validate the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire-Short Form (... more The aim of the present study was to validate the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire-Short Form (BPAQ-SF) among Portuguese juvenile delinquents. With a total sample of 237 male participants, subdivided into an incarcerated forensic sample (n=192) and a community sample (n=45), the Portuguese version of the BPAQ-SF demonstrated good psychometric properties in terms of factor structure, internal consistency, convergent validity, discriminant validity, predictive validity and known-groups validity that generally justify its use among Portuguese youth. Statistically significant associations were found with drug use and alcohol abuse.

With a total forensic sample of 310 participants subdivided in a male group (n = 217) and a female group (n = 93) statistically significant differences were found between the groups regarding the Antisocial Process Screening Device self-report (APSD-SR) callous-unemotional dimension, the Adapted Self-reported Delinquency Scale (ASRDS), and the Index of Crime Severity (ICS). Conduct disorder prevalence was very high in both genders, but no statistically significant sex differences were found. Institutionalized female juvenile offenders clearly show less callous-unemotional traits, and lower frequency and severity of delinquent behaviors.

With a total of 760 youths of both sexes divided in a forensic sample (n=250) and a community sample (n=510), comparisons were made with respect to the two constructs and a multiple regression model was estimated having the self-reported delinquency as the dependent variable. The results indicate that the forensic sample is characterized as having low self-esteem and high narcissism when compared to the community sample, that the correlation between the two constructs is almost non-existing, and that narcissism is the variable that contributes the most to the prediction of self-reported delinquency.

With a total of 760 participants, male (n = 543) and female (n = 217), divided in an inmate forensic sample (n = 250) and a community sample (n = 510), the authors were able to demonstrate psychometric properties that justify its use with the Portuguese juvenile population, in terms of factor structure, internal consistency, temporal stability, convergent validity, divergent validity, concurrent validity, and cutoff score. The predictive importance of psychopathic traits, self-reported delinquent behavior, and behavior problems on the prediction of sample membership (forensic vs. community) was established by binary logistic regression.

Using a sample of 88 young females from the Juvenile Detention Centers of the Portuguese Ministry of Justice (white Europeans group: n = 44, ethnic minorities group: n = 44), and a sample of 130 young females from the schools of the Lisbon region (white Europeans group: n = 65, ethnic minorities group: n = 65) results showed that almost no differences were found within the forensic group and the school group. Independently of ethnic group membership, psychopathic traits scores were significantly associated with behavioral problems, conduct disorder, self-reported delinquency, crime seriousness, age of crime onset, and age at first trouble with the law.
