Remote sensing can effectively be used for detecting and monitoring of oil spills. Optical sensors provide important information for oil spill contingency planning. Remote sensing techniques have contributed a great extent to the development of oil pollution monitoring systems. However, the available detection methods, mainly designed for spaceborne and airborne long-distance inspection, are too expensive and complex to be used in an operational way by relatively unskilled personnel. In the framework of DEO-SOM project (European AMPERA project), an innovative water inspection method was investigated, based on the analysis of suspicious water samples in laboratory using the spectral fluorescent signature (SFS) technique. The SFS technique is based on the fluorescence properties of the oil compounds. Different oil products were analyzed in the laboratory, using eight LED light sources with wavelengths ranging from 270 to 850 nm to excite the samples and a USB4000-FL fluorescence spectrometer to register the fluorescence spectra. Finally, an algorithm to identify oil products in polluted water samples with known substances was developed. The mean of the 16 replicas was calculated for each point and used to calculate the Euclidean distance with respect to a known sample constituted by distilled water and single oil. Finally, the percentage of similarity referred to every oil was determined.

The study was carried out at a constant temperature of 309.65 K on two Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus warneri) and two Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis) with a concentration of 106 CFU mL-1. A commercial ultrasonic bath was used. The effects of the ultrasounds were analysed using a microcalorimetric technique. The microcalorimetric bacterial growth curves were obtained and, stemming from said curves, the heat released by microorganisms during a culture time of 24 h was calculated. The values of the heat released in the samples treated and untreated with ultrasounds were compared. The ultrasound treatment appears to be effective in inhibiting the growth of the two Gram-positive bacteria, but not in the case of the Gram-negative, which presented greater resistance at the same experimental conditions. This study also shows microcalorimetry as an efficient technique to determine the effect of ultrasound waves on bacterial growth.

The charts of these patients were reviewed retrospectively for pathology reports showing positive or close surgical margins. Fifty-one of these cases had final pathology results interpreted as close vaginal margins (CVM), which we define as tumor less than or equal to 0.5 cm from the vaginal margins of resection. All slides of blocks with close vaginal margins were found and reviewed by a single pathologist. Twenty-eight (54.9%) had parametrial involvement or positive lymph nodes and received adjuvant radiation therapy (RT). Of the remaining 23 cases, only 6 had other high risk factors, tumor greater than 4 cm, poorly differentiated, greater than 50% invasion, or lymphovascular space involvement. Sixteen of 23 received radiation. The 5-year survival was significantly greater with RT, 81.3%, than without RT, 28.6% (P< 0.05). The recurrence rate was also decreased from 85.7 to 12.5% (P< 0.01). Although present in less than 2% of radical hysterectomy specimens, CVM without other high risk factors may be an important prognostic variable that should be considered when making adjuvant therapy decisions.

However, previous studies have shown that intraocular administration of AF64A in rats not only reduced the number of cholinergic neurons in the retina, but also induced ultrastructural alterations in the microvasculature.

Surgery is the standard treatment, and radiotherapy seems to reduce local relapse. No other treatment has proved to be useful in the case of non-resectable diseases. A 41-year-old woman suffering HGES, with positive staining for CD117 (c-kit) and large abdominal and retroperitoneal mass progressing after chemotherapy, was treated with Imatinib Mesylate. After 3 months, objective response was documented and radical surgery performed. Two years after surgical intervention, she is currently free of the disease. The response seen with Imatinib should be further investigated in a larger number of cases.

Despite experimental evidence of the complex behavioral actions of this drug, there have been little data reported about its effects on social behavior. Our main aim was to investigate the effects of acute administration of bupropion, alone or plus nicotine, on social interaction in mice. OF1 group-housed male mice were confronted in a neutral cage with an anosmic opponent during a 10 minutes encounter. Time allocated to body care and digging was reduced by administration of bupropion (40 mg/kg) both when administered alone and with nicotine (1 and 0.5 mg/kg). The lowest dose of bupropion (10 mg/kg) also reduced digging when combined with 1 mg/kg of nicotine. Time spent on non-social exploration and exploration from a distance was significantly higher in mice treated with bupropion (40 mg/kg) alone or combined with nicotine (1 and 0.5 mg/kg). The lowest dose of bupropion (10 mg/kg) increased non-social exploration when combined with 0.5 mg/kg of nicotine and exploration from a distance when combined with 1 mg/kg of nicotine. Ethopharmacological assessment of the behavior of groups of mice treated with different combinations of the two drugs indicates that nicotine can potentiate some of the behavioral effects of low doses of bupropion. Results also indicate that bupropion, either alone or combined with nicotine, has no significant effects on social investigation, suggesting that this drug does not induce a clear anxiolytic profile in OF1 mice.
