During her last visit to Africa, Michelle Obama was photographed with other African first ladies at the African First Ladies Summit. While first ladies, though often-powerful women themselves, access power through marriage to a man who becomes president or prime minister, there is a growing body of women writing of their own experiences of engagement with power, as first woman presidents or prime ministers themselves. In this chapter, Dr. Carole Boyce Davies addresses issues of leadership in two different arenas, the first wife pathway to leadership, the rise of women as presidents themselves. It also examines issues of sexuality in the construction of both versions of Black women’s political leadership.

It argues that one can look at African women writers using notions of marginality, minoring, and effacement in order to locate these writers' positions in the context of a variety of literary traditions. One has to move beyond these traditions, however, to view the specificity of African women's writing by examining how these works decenter, oppose, and transform hierarchical or silencing arrangements.

Various continuities of African oral literature have been documented, the Anancy corpus being the most prominent example. The calypso, which has attained its highest expression in Trinidad, also has an African ancestry, as several researchers in the fields of Caribbean history, literature and folklore have agreed. 1 Additionally, the traditional descriptor of this topical song, used also as vocal audience commendation for excellent composition and rendition, is Kaiso, a term which has been attributed African (Hausa) ancestry. 2 While its form has been identified as African, z content anallysis has focused on its social and political commentary, especially the highly visible male/female "conflict.
