More specifically it sought to describe: (1) the language preferred by the speakers in face-to-face oral interaction with different interlocutors in different domains; (2) the factors that motivate the speakers in choosing one language over others; (3) the status of Chabacano and the factors that led the language to its current status; and (4) the possible link between language and age and language and domain. Data were obtained through survey, participant observation, in-depth interview and dyadic recording. A total of 278 individuals who were grouped according to age (70-years old and over, 40-69 years old, 20-39 years old, 5-19 years old) participated in the study. They were chosen through purposive, accidental and snowball sampling techniques. Data gathering lasted for five months. In Zamboanga, Chabacano, Filipino,...

As long as there are new, interesting, or deviant features from the data, they are always worthy of a micro analysis. For this paper, we report the ‘question-declaration coupling’ in meeting talks as a new feature and explicate it through the discourse of social inequality and collegiality in the academe. The data came from a total of five recorded meetings from three departments, such as Education, Arts Science, and Social Work, in a private university in Manila, Philippines. The meetings lasted for five hours and 50 minutes. From adjacency pairs of question-answer, the sequential pattern shows that the questions deserve conspicuous answers from the subordinates, but the Chair automatically couples them with declarative sentences and other utterances that serve as continuers. The pattern is categorised as a strategic turn-suppressing mecha...

Results show that a. No first-pair of the "through-produced" questions has been answered; b. the answers to the second-pair questions are achieved through paraphrases, clarifications, keyword repetitions, and circuitous rephrasing until the hearer conforms with the agenda set; c. The subordinates frame their default identities with lower epistemic knowledge, and d. "Through-produced" multiple questions can be a manifestation of Chair's power. Implications and recommendations for cross-linguistic comparisons are offered to generalize the findings beyond the specific domain of the meeting.

This paper demonstrates a trend of nativization of English in a rural area as seen in a local daily. Thirty newspaper articles from The Stalwart Journal, a provincewide weekly circulating bilingual journal in the island province of Masbate, Bicol Region in the Philippines, were examined to identify the local lexical intrusions in the English text. The borrowing and assimilation of local lexical terms were analyzed and categorized. These lexical items were found in various categories: people, cultural events, cultural groups, public and private organizations, government programs, program units, government agencies, places, broadcast and social media, transportation, food, animals, human descriptions, public services, and other items. English nativization is shown in the borrowing and switching to local or native lexis in the news articles of the local daily.

Using the contrastive genre analysis framework of Le, Kui, and Ying-Long (2008), and Cheng, Sin, and Li (2008), the study examined three authentic court decisions taken from the Kachruvian inner, outer, and expanding Englishes, namely, American English, Philippine English, and Indonesian English. The data were analyzed three times in terms of (1) rhetorical segments and functions, and (2) moves and segments. In the level of rhetorical segments and functions, results revealed that (1) the three court decisions exhibited more similarities than differences. On the other hand, (2) the legal texts displayed certain moves and steps, regular with and distinct from each other. Furthermore, certain linguistic characteristics of the court decisions were also revealed. Cultures of the inner, outer, and expanding circles embedde...

Though there are many “Englishes” in the globe today, they do have similarities and differences which are manifested in the different styles employed by writers around the world. In this regard, the study aimed to analyze the structure of verb phrases in news headlines of the different countries in Kachru’s three concentric circles leading to the identification of types of verbs used. This is done to give fresher ideas into the style of headline writing by understanding what types of verbs are used by the writers from the inner, outer, and expanding circles. Using Brinton, L and Brinton, D’s (2010) structure of verb complementation, the researchers analyzed five news headlines per circle which served as their corpus in identifying the complements present in the verb phrases. This, furthermore, led to the following results: a) inner and outer circles mostly use monotransi...
