In this contribution, we describe the X-ray fluorescence analysis carried out on the Sudarium. Among the chemical elements detected, calcium shows a statistically significant higher presence in the areas with bloody stains. This fact allows correlating its distribution with the anatomical features of the corpse. A large excess of calcium is observed close to the tip of the nose. It is atypical to find soil dirt in this zone of the anatomy, but it is just the same zone where a particular presence of dust was found in the Shroud. The very low concentration of strontium traces in the Sudarium matches also well with the type of limestone characteristic of the rock of Calvary in Jerusalem. This new finding adds to others recently released and it strengthens the tradition that both cloths have wrapped the body of Jesus of Nazareth.

The major result of the research was to estimate the natural aging of the linen of the Shroud, through which it was found to be compatible with the hypothesis of a 2000-year-old relic, and not a medieval fabric. The present work regards the theoretical natural aging of the linen versus different alleged historical–geographical paths of the Shroud through cities where the presence of icons of Jesus Christ is attested. The theoretical results of the natural aging of the Shroud, calculated for the year 2021, agree extremely well with the experimental results for at least one alleged path. The results also show that if the Shroud were medieval and kept in Europe for 7 centuries, natural aging that is one order of magnitude less than that measured by WAXS would have resulted. Today, the Shroud is kept in a rel...

They lead to confirm the use of both cloths on the same person. In this contribution, we describe the X-ray fluorescence analysis carried out on the Sudarium. Among the chemical elements detected, the most reliable was calcium. Being associated to soil dust, it shows a statistically significant higher presence in the areas with bloody stains. This fact allows correlating its distribution with the anatomical features of the corpse. A large excess of calcium is observed close to the tip of the nose. Only reconstructible sensors according to the VRE criteria are included in the statistical model and the same criterion is used to determine the number of principal components to retain when creating the model with data

In this work, the benefits of using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to achieve this goal have been evaluated. PCA method has confirmed, in a simple example, its capacity for fault detection and location. It is shown that this tool allows a more obvious detection of singularities. It also supports the choice of the minimum set of sensors o calculated data to be evaluated in the systematic analysis.

Only fault sensors are considered in the study. The same principle is applied to analyse the number of principal component to be included in the model based on the reconstructability of them. The trade off between optimality and dimensionality is discussed in the paper.

We can share our experience in the analysis of some of them. By using the results from these examples and comparing them with the results of the analysis of the Shroud of Turin itself, we could assess the actual possibility that the true Shroud was made by an artist. The negativity, the absence of contour, the absence of the figure at the hidden side and the transparency of the Shroud image differ considerably from their copies. Moreover, the laboratory analyses confirmed the presence of pigments based on heavy elements. In our opinion, the original Shroud of Turin can not be the work of a painter.
