Cerebral ischemia is the first clinical manifestation in 1/3 of cases of atrial myxomas. Although almost half of patients with atrial myxoma show changes at neurological exam, non-hemorrhagic cere b r a l i n f a rction is seen in computed tomography in practically all cases. We present the case of a 40 year- o l d woman whose first clinical manifestation of atrial myxoma was an ischemic stroke. With the increasing knowledge of the pathophysiology of the ischemic insult, and the possibility of the thrombolysis in the acute phase, the management of the stroke patients is considered an emergency. This consensus is the result of a recent meeting to establish a better approach to these patients. This is the official guideline for the management of patients with acute stroke of the Brazilian Cerebrovascular Disease Society.

The SBDCV was spawned from the Working Group in Cerebrovascular Pathology of the ABN, the name formerly used by the ABN to group scholars of different subspecialties. These working groups are now referred to as Scientific Departments, whose mission it is to foster scientific development and help organize Brazilian Neurology meetings. BEGINNINGS The Cerebrovascular Diseases Working Group was set up in 1982, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Roberto Melaragno Filho, an eminent neurologist deeply involved with cerebrovascular diseases. Professor Melaragno was tasked with the initial structuring of the group of neurologists interested in cerebrovascular diseases. This working group had the following coordinators, with two-year tenures:

Studies were directed toward relationships among these events during cerebral ischemia ("four-vessel occlusion model") in pentobar bital anesthetized rats. Results demonstrate that EEG suppression and anoxic depolarization do not occur as a simple function of progressive oxygen decline during ce rebral ischemia. Rates of K + elevation, tPOz decline, and

In an attempt to study the influence of heredity in a selected group of patients, we evaluated 128 subjects that presented febrile febrile convulsions. Of these, 18 (14,3 % of the sample) had at least one relative affected by the same problem. Even though a more definite conclusion depends on sample enlargement and on setting up a control group, pedigree observation suggests the participation of an autosomal dominant gene, with incomplete and probably low penetrance, in the etiology of febrile convulsions.

IAA produced oxidation of cytochrome a,a3' increased local oxygenation, in creased K + 0, and, in response to neuronal activation, slowed rates of K + 0 reaccumulation. Rates of rereduction of cytochrome a,a3, after the oxidation of this cy tochrome by stimulation, were also slowed by IAA.

Unexplained reactivation of Chagas' disease should be included among the diagnostic criteria of AIDS in human immunodeficiency virus positive patients. On the other hand, AIDS should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with unexplained reactivation of Chagas' disease.
