Audit committee characteristics was measured by independence, terms of service and study specialization as proxy. The study was guided by the Agency Theory and adopted descriptive cross-sectional survey and correlational research designs. A sample size was 108 licensed Deposit Taking Saccos drawn from a target population of 175. Primary data was collected from the board members and management executives. The analysis was done using descriptive statistics and multiple regressions. The study findings suggest that the overall correlation coefficient for Audit Committee characteristics and performance was found to be 0.144 with a p-value of 0.143> =0.05. This implies a weak positive and insignificant relationship between Audit Committee characteristics and performance. Based on findings, the study recommends proper constitution of audit committee with well spelt out ...

Sub catchment degradation, organizational weakness, the flow and quality of water had started to diminish, creating challenges for local livelihoods, wildlife in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, and in maintaining biodiversity and healthy ecosystem functioning. Water resources can be successfully managed only if the natural, social, economic and political environments, in which water occurs and used, are taken fully into consideration. The aim of this study is to determine the influence of institutional structures influence on sustainability of projects in Nyagores river sub-catchment basin in Bomet County, Kenya. The research designs used were descriptive survey and correlational research design. Stepwise and purposive sampling formed the sampling procedure. The results are presented descriptively using Tables while for qualitative data, narrative statements were used. Questionnaires, Interview guide and document analysis were used for data collection. The sample size was 371, from a targeted a population of 56,508 household heads and 10 informants, purposively selected from the water concerned institutions and ministries of Water and Agriculture. Total of 371 questionnaires were given out to the respondents and only 321, were duly filled and returned representing (86.5%). The objective was to establish the extent to which institutional structures influence sustainability of projects in Nyangores River sub-catchment Basin. The results indicated that there was a positive correlation r = 0.552, (p < 0.05). The null hypothesis was rejected and concluded that there is a significant relationship between the institutional structures and sustainability of projects in Nyangores river sub-catchment basin. R 2 was 0.304; hence, 30.4% of changes in sustainability of projects are explained by institutional structures.

The target population for the study was 460 and a sample size of 210 drawn from the same. As per the tools used, 152 questionnaires and structured interview schedules were successfully completed, representing 72.8% return rate. Simple linear regression model was used and a test for significance computed at 0.05 level of significance. Hypothesis was stated in null form for which the following results were recorded: that, R=0.157, R=0.025, β=0.124, t=1.956, F(1,151)=3.827, p=0.052>0.05, thus we failed to reject the null hypothesis for lack of sufficient evidence. It was therefore concluded that contractors’ management ability does not significantly influence performance of road construction infrastructural projects. This suggests that management ability of contractors explains well the success of the project from t...

Worldwide, forest industries also provide employment for 60 million people while some 1 billion people depend on drugs derived from forest plants for their medicinal needs (World Bank, 2006). They serve as a source of food, oxygen, shelter, recreation, and spiritual sustenance, and they are the source for over five thousand (5,000) commercially-traded products, ranging from pharmaceuticals to timber and clothing (CBD, 2009). Forest performs a wide range of critical environmental and climatic functions and it serves as homes to the majority of the world's plant and animal species. The significance of forest can be classified under environmental, social and economic (Abass, 2007), and based on this humans have historically attached religious, philosophical and aesthetic significance to forest. Forest resources play a key role in protecting the environment and are of tremendous importance to the sustainable development of every society. The world's total forest area amounts to just over 4 billion hectares, equivalent to 31% of the total land area, and on average of 0.6 ha per capita (FAO, 2010). In Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia such as Nepal and Bangladesh, rural populations depend, directly or indirectly, on forests for their daily subsistence and income needs (Kaimowitz, 2003; Phiri, Chirwa, Watt and Syampungani, 2012. Participatory Forest Management (PFM) is the local involvement of communities in the management of forests done through a process of inclusion, equity, and democratization of governance of the forest resources (Agrawal and Gupta, 2005). The emphasis on the participation of local stakeholders in natural-resource management has led to an examination of how such an approach has been implemented and its successes and limitations which calls for institutionalization of forest conservation programs. Based on their study in Asian forest management, Lee and Park (2001) believe that the participation of local people in forest resource management can maintain the integrity of local ecology, that forest co-management can facilitate

The study aimed to examine the influence of contractors' safety record on road performance. This is to create better understanding of how the safety record of contractors could either positively or negatively influence performance of roads during post-delivery stage. The study used both descriptive survey research design and correlation design based on a pragmatic mixed method approach. Through stratified sampling and proportionate sampling, a sample of 210 was drawn from a population of 460 comprising of registered contractors and Public Service Vehicles (PSV) drivers within Nairobi County in Kenya. Questionnaires were distributed using simple random sampling. The questionnaires returned were 153 in total representing 72.8% of all questionnaires distributed to the respondents. Data was descriptively analyzed using percentages, frequencies, means and standard deviations for measuring central tendency and variability. Inferential analysis was done by use of correlation and regression. The descriptive analysis revealed that safety policy management system, insurance policy, and adequacy of standards in addressing safety outcome are to some extent practiced and adhered to. However, compliance behavior to safety procedures is still weak and requires improvement. The null hypothesis was tested and the results obtained from a simple linear regression indicated that, R=0.657, R 2 =0.431, B=0.359, t=10.703, F (1,151)=114.558, p=0.000< 0.05. This means that contractors' safety record has a strong positive and significant relationship with road performance and that 43.1% of variation in performance is explained by safety record. This study recommends that contractors' safety record should part and parcel of the evaluation criteria used in selection of a suitable road contractor to ensure road performance is achieved even after construction is completed. The study is significant in that it contributes to the body of knowledge by providing empirical data on the need for safety procedures in urban road construction and beyond.

The study was necessitated by anecdotal documentation of such factors and the financial performance of SMEs in strategic alliances, particu larly in developing economies. Data was sourced from a total of 120 SMEs involved in strategic alliances. Chi square was used to test hypotheses, while binary logistic regression was applied to determine the effect of s uch factors on the financial performance of SMEs involved in strategic alliances, while considering the influence of institutional characteristics. The stu dy found that financial performance of SMEs in strategic alliances was significantly associated with firm attributes such as age, type of business activ ities, legal status, place of location, average income and firm size. Among the pre- and post-alliance formation factors, pr...
