This paper draws from an intimate recollection of variegated associations of the author’s great-grandmother, Kalavati Devi, with the movement to scrutinize the lack of recognition to women in the history of Indian freedom movement. The paper argues for an intertwined understanding of public participation and domestic roles of women in the light of their nationalist consciousness. The narrative of Kalavati documents her contribution to the nationalist cause beyond her public role to explore whether her role as a wife and a mother can be viewed as part of the nationalist movement. The paper also makes a case for using family memories, oral narratives, and non-formal sources to document political activism of women and bring attention to the domestic sphere in the history of the freedom movement.

Within the disciplinary framework of institutional subordination, Buddhist nuns created spaces that provided women with spiritual opportunities away from social and domestic ties. Although monks dominated both the Buddhist saṅgha and religious texts, the earliest nuns worked assiduously and creatively to strengthen their practice. This article explores early Buddhist texts to unravel gendered monastic experiences. The nuns could not have registered a vital presence in the history of Buddhism if they had remained passive members. Social relations before they joined the order, as well as the newly forged bonds within, played a significant role in their progress in comprehending and observing spiritual practices. When seen on their own terms, the position and contribution of nuns appear stronger and more agentive than has been usually assumed.

Even though the stories are largely intended to be moral parables, they are replete with historical details. With a broadly Buddhist orientation, they draw freely from the existing folklore. The many tales incidentally reveal various aspects of everyday lives of ordinary people. They also touch upon aspects of their relations with the elite, the repression that they had to suffer and the strategies they devised to cope with a society marked by deep differences based on caste, class and gender. These forms of repression manifested themselves through the social hierarchy of caste, the class differences between masters and slaves, and the patriarchal overtone in gender roles. The various forms of subordination, aggravated by oppressive factors of political power, patriarchal mindset and vulnerability of groups like the aged, form the focus of this study.

The first part dealing with mindfulness as a tool for spiritual sustenance shall draw from the corpus of Buddhist scriptures. The Pāli texts chart out the methodology for mindfulness meditation. The scriptural descriptions pertaining to mindfulness are a part of core teachings of Buddhism. One has to begin with a comprehension of the aṭṭhāṅgikamagga that enunciates right mindfulness. After an exposition of the classical interpretation, the paper shall briefly sketch its role in clinical psychotherapy and everyday practice in contemporary times. The last section shall draw conclusions by approaching the classical and modern interpretation of mindfulness meditation in an integrated manner to establish its utility and maximize the benefits.
