In the wake of global discussions on sexual abuse in the Church, the Church has updated its penal... more In the wake of global discussions on sexual abuse in the Church, the Church has updated its penal laws and made organisational and administrative innovations to ensure that sexual abuse cases are reported and appropriately handled to ensure care for the victims. As Nigeria has three legal systems operating simultaneously, which also influences the phenomenon of sexual abuse, this heterogeneity poses challenges for the Church in Nigeria. Given the reality of religious pluralism, the sociocultural differences between dioceses in the country, the continuous movement of people, and the need for uniformity in penal cases, this book is a study on the sexual abuse of minors and vulnerable adults in Nigeria that marries canon law with the socio-legal context of the Nigerian society, with a focus on the Church’s service to abuse victims.

Dying is part of human existence, and part of respect for the human body is proper burial. While ... more Dying is part of human existence, and part of respect for the human body is proper burial. While burials must be done as the human remains cannot be left unattended, funeral rites accompanying the burial accord proper dignity to the deceased. However, there are instances where people are denied funeral rites for various reasons. Among the controversial ones in the Church in Nigeria is clearance-based denial, where a deceased is denied an ecclesiastical funeral for non-payment of Church levies and dues. Since every member of a secular and ecclesial community not under penalties or is in an irregular situation is entitled to an ecclesiastical funeral, this paper considers if clearance-based denial contravenes the human and ecclesial rights of the deceased whose body is human and who was a Christian faithful till death.
