This study examined the extent to which farm households' respond to production inputs and output price changes using panel data covering the period 2010-2016. Specifically, to determine whether a commodity output's price positively affects its supply and other output categories; and whether an input price negatively affects its usage in Nigeria within the multiple input and multiple output (MI-MO) framework. The translog profit function was used to simultaneously examine the production response of farm households' in terms of the factor demand and produce supply. Seven output supply and four input demand equations were estimated. The results indicated that the response of output supply to own price ranged from 0.59 for animal products and 1.24 for cereals. The own-price demand elasticities of farm input range from-0.82 for mechanisation to-1.46 for intermediate inputs. Also, a substantial degree of farm households' response to input price shocks. Farm inputs and outputs were economic complements to price changes. Therefore, price policy issues aimed at improving the production response of farm households' to both input and output price shocks should be developed with a particular focus on farm inputs.

This study assessed the health effect of pesticide use in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State with from socioeconomic point of view by identifying the various pesticides used, describing the health signs and symptoms associated with pesticide application and determining the health effects of pesticide application on farm households. The survey instrument was a well-structured questionnaire administered to respondents through multiple stage sampling technique. A total of 120 respondents were interviewed for the study. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics and Tobit regression model. The results showed that commonly used pesticides comprised of herbicides (61.67 %), fungicides (20.0%) and insecticides (18.33%). Majority (95%) reported that they or someone in their family had suffered from pesticide-related health signs and symptoms during or after application o...

Data were obtained by questionnaire method and focused among others on the socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents, illness episodes. The data were analysis by using the cost of illness procedure, contingent valuation method, and multiple regression model. It was found that 95% of adire producers are indigene of Ogun State. Body pain, skin ulceration and respiratory diseases accounted for 38.3%, 19.2% and 12.5% of the perceived illnesses association with dyed fabrics activities. An average cost of illness ofN-13301.17 estimated for the sample with time cost of illness accounting for 40.69% with producers losing an average of 15 man-days to illness during the period under onsideration by the stupy. However, the mean WTP to avoid a recurrence of these illness episodes was estimated to be N567.98/month. It was also found that income, gender, level of education, financial cost of illness, time cost of illness, preventive cost of illness, and number of illness episode were the significant factors influencing the amounts respondents were willing to pay to avoid a recurrence of these illness episodes. The findings of this study can be vital input to the economic decision-making process for long-term sustainable vocational/ occupational health policy reform programme particularly for artisans in both rural and urban areas with a view to reducing occupational illnesses.

The commodity bundles of all the food groups were necessities goods, as their budget elasticities were positive and also inelastic. Animal products were a luxury good. There is no strong complementary and substitutive relationship existing between the commodity groups as the cross price elasticities estimated were smaller than the own price elasticities. Households' expenditure on pulses is not affected by changes in their own prices. Policy issue such as stable food prices is important in ensuring that households are assisted in and encourage consuming balance diets.

Research paper thumbnail of Farm Households’ Demand Response to Escalating Food Prices in Nigeria

Journal of Applied Economics, 2021

This study examined food demand response to rising food prices among farm households in Nigeria u... more This study examined food demand response to rising food prices among farm households in Nigeria using the three waves of the General Household Survey (Panel) conducted between 2010 and 2016. Analysis was within the Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System framework from which price elasticities and compensated and uncompensated expenditure were computed. The results show that higher prices of almost all of the food categories affected their demand by households. Harvest and location dummies as well as household demographic variables were found to influence household food demand. Poor households consumed less of all the food categories compared to their non-poor counterparts. Escalating prices result in a welfare loss of household expenditure on commodity groups such as rice, wheat, pulses, tuber and other food and non-food items. Overall, 70.1% of the households suffered welfare loss that amounted to an average of 7.52% of the household budget annually.

Metallic nano particles dispersion in a pure fluid leads to considerable enhancement in the thermal conductivity. The improvement in the thermal conductivity is dependent on various factors. In the present research, two machine learning algorithms, a correlation and Group Method of Data Handling, are applied to predict thermal conductivity of silver/water nanofluid. Temperature, concentration and size of solid particles are considered as the input data. According to statistical comparison of the models, employing GMDH artificial neural network results in more precise and appropriate model. The coefficients of correlation, R-squared values, for the proposed correlation and ANN-based models are 0.948 and 0.99 respectively.

This paper investigates consumer’s acceptance, purchase intention, preference and the factors influencing consumers’ willingness to pay a premium price for iodine biofortified tomato fruits in Abeokuta, southwest, Nigeria. The study collected primary data from a sample of 240 respondents. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). The results show that respondents are willing to pay a premium price of 72% for biofortified tomato fruits. The results show that the bid price (p<0.05), prior knowledge (p<0.1), age (p<0.05), household size (p<0.01), health status (p<0.01) and income (p<0.01) were the significant factors influencing respondents’ willingness to pay. This study examines the socioeconomic determinants of women’s empowerment or bargaining power amo... more This study examines the socioeconomic determinants of women’s empowerment or bargaining power among married couples living in farm households in Nigeria. A multistage random sampling technique is employed to collect cross-sectional data from 320 farm households aged between 15 to 50 years. Women’s empowerment or bargaining power is measured using 18 questions, and a Tobit regression model is used to analyze all the variables employed. According to the findings, husbands have five more years of formal education than wives and literacy rates are higher for men (62%) than for women (30%). This differenceleads to more decision-making power for men. The result shows that there is a visible gender disparity in the worth and value of assets brought into the marriage, with the men bringing around 34% while that of the women is around 3% making men the main decision-makers and women less empowered. As a policy recommendation, women’s status in society should be enhanced through investment in...

Using data from 320 farm households with a Logit regression model, the study revealed that 31.86 % of children under-five years of age were stunted, 32 % were underweight and 16.2 % were wasted. Children growing up healthy were 62 %, implying that one – third of under-five children in the study area still experience nutrition deficiency. About 3.33 % and 1.05 % children simultaneously experienced stunting and wasting together, which perhaps suggests a harsh deprivation environment. In addition, 63.33 % of women in the study area had low bargaining power implying that they lack control over important decisions in their households. Women who enjoy decision-making power in their households, particularly with large purchasing power, are associated with having children with better height-for-age, mass-for-age, and mass-for-height ratios. ...

The fixed effects models were estimated while controlling for participation in non-farm livelihood activities. Analysis indicated that seasonal comparisons of the average per capita daily calorie intake is lowest in the post-harvest season of 2011 (2511.44 kilocalories), which is higher than the average recommended intake. Results showed that rural households had lower per capita calorie intake and dietary diversity than urban households, which may be an indication of a shift in the calorie inadequacy from urban to rural farm households’ setting in Nigeria. In addition, income and education improvement are crucial for raising food calories and satisfaction of hunger needs among households with total food consumption expenditure of 79.0%. The study recommended that a combina...
