This study, conducted from May-October 2009, qualitatively and quantitatively investigated the effect of using concordances on 37 Thai EFL low-prof iciency learners’ ability to correct their own grammatical errors in error-correction tasks. The learners were asked to compose a 150 word-long story, prompted by a series of pictures. The f ive most common errors were then identif ied; nouns, verbs, prepositions, articles, and subject-verb agreement. As part of the experiment, the researcher used three similar stories to train the learners to notice certain linguistic forms on concordance outputs and to correct the identif ied errors based on patterns they induced. Post-test and retention test were used to measure their ability to correctly induce grammatical rules. Stimulated recall ...

Four teachers' manuals of EFL College English textbooks for Chinese non-English major students were investigated. The analysis revealed that more than half of the cultural content was unidentifiable. Among identified cultural content, the textbooks were dominated by target cultural content while international target culture and source cultural content contained a very small percentage. It was also found out that among the 19 cultural themes under Big "C" and little "c" culture, the predominant theme was little "c" of "values" and the absent themes were common little "c" themes (i.e. "food", "holidays", "hobbies and "body language"). Such lack of source information and imbalanced selection in NHCE of cultural themes might not be sufficient to develop Chinese non-English major students' ICC and thus might cause difficulties to students when they take part in intercultural communication. This study also makes suggestions on how culture can be represented in university level Chinese textbooks to promote students' ICC.
The topics of climate change, population growth, and deforestation, as discussed in publications ... more The topics of climate change, population growth, and deforestation, as discussed in publications such as New Scientist, Discover, Time, and Our Planet, exemplify contemporary writing on science for the general community. As such, it is assumed that they are presented in an objective, scientific, informative way. Furthermore, these topics illustrate what it means to write complex issues in a popular manner. Consequently, they provide an opportunity for examining at least one area of popular science as a generic phenomenon. Through an investigation of thirty texts (ten on each of the three topics mentioned), the consistencies and distinctive features of writing on these environmental issues are investigated, in particular using discourse tools drawn from Systemic Functional linguistics. The foremost tools are the proposals concerning GSP (Generic Structure Potential) put forward by Hasan, which provide an outline of the syntagmatic unfolding of a text ("logogenetic perspective&qu...

The study employed the Moral Judgment Test, translated from English into Thai and validated in 247 students, as an moral judgment instrument. The scale satisfied four validity criteria: preference hierarchy, quasi-simplex structure of stage preference, affective-cognitive parallelism, and positive correlation between education and moral competence score (C-index). Test-retest reliability at a 1-month interval was 0.90. To investigate the impact of the KMDD, 83 pharmacy technician and dental nursing students were asked to participate in the study. The subjects were randomly assigned into control (n = 41) or experimental (n = 42) groups. The experimental group participated in a 90-min KMDD once a week for 6 consecutive weeks. Students in the control group also met once a week for 6 weeks to discuss the topics not related to ethic...

One-hundred and twenty students with different levels of English, ages ranging from 9 to 21 years old, were divided into low and high achiever groups. They participated in the quantitative data collection phase. Data were collected through an English proficiency test and a questionnaire. The results revealed a significant difference regarding Ought-to L2 Self and the L2 Learning Experience between the two groups. A significant correlation between the Ideal L2 Self and language proficiency was found among high achievers, whereas a significant correlation between the Ought-to L2 Self and the L2 Learning Experience was the case among low achievers. For the qualitative study, twenty out of one hundre...
