In Germany—despite several tens of thousands of people showing up for the international action day on October 15th, the situation has been different. After some demonstrations in 2009 and 2010 organized on a platform of “We won’t pay for your crisis,” there had been mostly smaller local manifestations not backed by broader alliances. This changed with the Blockupy-Frankfurt protests at the end of May 2012 that called for European action days to shut down the financial district. But attempts to include the big unions into alliances opposing the crisis politics of the government have failed; and the women’s movement has been basically non-existent in Germany for about two decades. I will try to shed some light on how the general weakness of the movement is related to the strategies of integration into neo-liberal governance.

It resonates with "right" in the sense of right-wing politics, as they have been increasingly successful in elections and achieved devastating brutality in recent years. My concern in this text is with examining how neoliberalism has transformed notions of what constitutes a good life, how neoliberalism has changed ideas about adequate working conditions and a suitable work ethic, as well as how it has impacted upon understandings of the appropriate balance between productivity as it is subjectively experienced, suffering at work and social security. In particular, my focus is on the ways in which such transformations manifest themselves in television programmes. Moreover, I am interested in how these processes are related to the rise of the extreme right in Europe. At the beginning of the 21 st Century, an interview-based research project was conducted across Europe. One of its main findings was that the imposition of neoliberalism, and with it changes in the mode of production, has forced subjects to "reconsider and re-evaluate their position in the social world" (Flecker/Hentges 2004: 141). This means that subjects have had to reassess their place in society, ascertaining anew what it means to 'do the right thing' and how their desires and interests correspond with the demands of society as regards the nature of 'appropriate behaviour'. It was the political theorist Antonio Gramsci who further developed the Marxian concept of the 'mode of production'. Gramsci identified how technical-organizational changes within capitalism, together with the concepts of politics and ideology that emerge to 'manage' these changes, crystallize into a 'way of life' that informs how subjects come to see themselves and understand and interpret the demands placed upon them. Mode of production and way of life have to correspond in order for any kind of stable hegemony to arise, even if at the same time, these processes are continuously contested, both from above and from below. "No mode of production can consolidate without opening up new and fascinating possible courses of action in the design of subjects' lives; nor is a generalization of opinions, mentalities and lifestyles possible if they cannot be mediated by the technical and organizational requirements of a type of production that is able to create the means for them" (Barfuss 2002, 18). Gramsci develops the concept in relation to the previous period of 'Fordism' in the 1920s. The orientation towards mass production and the assembly line as the leading

They liberate them from fordistic boundaries but are market-mediated and often quickly turn out to be coercive. To analyze both aspects a theory of the subject is needed, that differentiates between societal demands on the one hand and how they are realized or declined by the acting subjects on the other. The article shows that there are some shortcomings within the governementality studies regarding this differentiation (due to the subjectivity-concept taken from Lacan) as well as in framing the management concepts within the demands of the new, neoliberal mode of production and patterns of living (Gramsci) that are fought for – from above and below, within work, concepts of the wellfare state and everyday culture. Referring to the Berlin school of Critical Psychology the article shows how these demands are brought forward...

Feelings of injustice going along with altering the trans-national mode of production, concepts of the welfare state and labour politics were taken into account by rightwing “critics” that fight globalization in fighting immigrants. The crisis and bail-out-politics enforced feelings of injustice but at the same time brought the state – and the unions – ‘back in’ e.g. in creating a ‘clash-for-clunkers’ project. That seems to have weakened right-wing parties in Germany and France presenting themselves as an authoritarian fordistic option, but at the same time strengthened racist campaigns in other countries.
