The present study used a cross-sectional research design to explore the attitudes of doctors', and nurses' working in Greek general hospitals, towards hospitalised patients who have attempted suicide. Data were collected using a likert type scale assessing attitudes towards attempted suicide patients. The scale was developed by the researcher, based on an instrument developed by Domino et al. (1982) and on concepts emerging from the literature review. In order to establish the scale's construct validity a factor analysis was performed in 186 (n=186) respondents and the following 8 factors emerged: positiveness, acceptance, religiosity, care, manipulation, per...

Moreover, research evidence has indicated that unfavorable attitudes among doctors and nurses exist towards attempted suicide patients, which have a negative impact upon the quality of care they receive. The aim of the study was to develop, pilot and validate a measure of attitudes towards patients who have attempted suicide. Method and Material: A questionnaire comprising 102 items was constructed from a existing validated instrument in combination with findings from a literature review. A pilot study was carried out with a sample of 40 (n=40) doctors and nurses, to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the instrument developed. Questionnaires were then distributed to a sample of 186 (n=186) doctors and nurses, working in two general hospitals in Athens area. In order to establish the scale’s construct validity a factor analysis was performed. In addition, a face validity of the measurement tool was assessed by a group of experts. Reliability of the questionnaire was assesses by test - retest. Results: Preliminary analysis reduced the 102 items of the questionnaire to 80. The following eight factors were retained: “positiveness”, “acceptability”, “religiosity”, “professional role and care”, “manipulation”, “personality traits”, “mental illness”, “discrimination”. The 8 factors yielded accounted for the 55.45% level of the total variance. The resultant “Attitudes Towards Attempted Suicide-Questionnaire (ATAS-Q) achieved high internal consistency, with Cronbach’s alpha of 0.96 (a=0.96) in test and a=0.97 in retest assessment. Conclusions: The construction, development and validation of the ATAS-Q will provide a useful measurement tool, enabling health care professionals to enhance their understanding of their attitudes towards patients who attempt suicide in order to enhance the provision of effective care to them.

This scoping review aims to examining and synthesizing the available literature about adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes and occupational participation restrictions of preterm children born < 37 weeks of gestation. The MEDLINE, Science Direct, CINAHL databases were searched from January 2013 to December 2023, for published cohort studies that assessed the neurodevelopmental outcomes and occupational participation of school-aged preterm children, compared to full-term born peers. Out of 6631 identified articles, 13 studies met the inclusion criteria and involved 958 preterm children, aged 6-10 years old. Studies included in the current scoping review reported adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes, such as cognitive impairment, executive function and sensory processing deficits, emotional and behavioral problems, language and visual perception difficulties, as well as occupational participation restrictions, like feeding difficulties, academic challenges and peer relationship problems. Findings suggest that neurodevelopmental deficits and occupational participation restrictions, especially in extremely preterm children, not only exist in early childhood but persist during school age. Future research should focus on exploring potential differences or patterns in neurodevelopmental outcomes and occupational participation between preterm groups with different gestational age ranges.

Method: An extensive literature search was performed aiming to identify and review research studies that investigate variables which influence stress and job satisfaction of nurses working in mental health settings. Results: This review shows that a variety of factors influence stress and job satisfaction of mental health nurses. Among these, clinical leadership and quality inter-professional collaboration between nurses and doctors and amongst nurses are particularly important. Nurses' job satisfaction was found to be influenced primarily by psychological stress and the quality of clinical leadership. Conclusions: The influence of the quality of collaboration amongst nurses and between nurses and doctors on nurses' job satisfaction is uncertain. A strong negative relationship was found between clinical leadership, inter-professional collaboration, stress and job satisfaction. Although a positive relationship between clinical leadership and nurses' job satisfaction was found, the association between clinical leadership and quality of inter-professional collaboration is unclear. The association between these variables and job satisfaction is positive but tenuous. In addition, a positive but weak relationship was revealed between the clinical leadership and the quality of relationships amongst nurses. Organisational issues, lack of nursing staff and patient care were found to be related to ward type mental health nurses' stress emerged as mediating variables between stress and job satisfaction. A hypothetical model of the relationships between these variables is presented for testing at a future study.
