A case study that utilised both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection was adopted. Data was collected using a questionnaire in 2015. Quantitative data was analysed using SPSS and qualitative data was analysed thematically. A purposive sample of 60 practicing nurses was used, 57 questionnaires were returned, giving a response rate of 95%. 54% of the nurses indicated that they used research information in their clinical practice. 12.28% of the nurses used research information very often in their clinical practice. Most of the nurses were prompted to seek information because of: emergency of new cases, to update themselves, to provide quality services, emergency of new technologies and due to a high disease burden. The importance of using research information by nurses in clinical practice has been cl...

It rarely focuses on how women's health information needs link to the development of the continent. The dissertation examines the interrelationships between women's health information needs and development. The study sought to establish the significance of information to women's health and development. In order to validate this link the study employed three data collection techniques - documentary research, interviews and electronic mail questionnaires. In illustrating that there is a relationship between women's health and development, the study argues that women's empowerment can only be achieved where sufficient information is provided for women to make informed independent decisions concerning health issues that affect them. This relates especially to when to have children; how to protect themselves against AIDS, what the early warning signals of breast and cervical cancer are, and how best to look after their children and the community at large. The study further argues that these types of challenges can only be met with an efficient and effective health information service that is both gender sensitive and context specific to the African continent

Thanks go to my supervisor Dr J. Gretchen Smith, Prof Jaya Raju and all the staff of the Department of Knowledge and Information Stewardship at UCT for their support rendered to me during my studies: that assistance enabled me to complete this work. This work would not have been possible without the assistance of so many people: Dr Akakandelwa Akakandelwa-for help with statistics. Ms Felicitas N. Moyo-for being the study mate. Thanks also go to the University of Zambia for the support; material and otherwise rendered to me. Milimo Mwiba, for all the shared memories. Bui tumelo to my family members: My beloved late mother who passed on just before I submitted my final thesis; Ma-Inambao Makula Siyumbwa Kanyengo; My Sisters-Gertrude Liyungu Kanyengo Imataa and Brendah (Ma-Lisulo) Kakulwa Kanyengo and all my nieces and nephews. And some libraries have taken advantage of this technology in order to introduce new library services as well as reach library users that traditionally they would not able to reach. This paper looks at the possibility of introducing a mobile library service by the University of Zambia (UNZA) library as an alternative way of providing information to university students. This is done by assessing the views of students. The findings points out that students will overwhelming accept the service. The paper concludes that by using mobile cell phones, the library can introduce new library services; expand its user base and reach users that are not easily reachable.

Research relevance has to be determined using measurements that show that the knowledge that arose from that research has made an impact on society. This paper, based on a literature review and preliminary research results, advocates for research impact measurements which take account of local contexts when evaluating the relevance of a journal article or indeed any research output. It concludes that a journal should go beyond traditional measurement metrics of citation analysis and bibliometrics alone as a measure of research impact. Although it is important to standardise measurements, it is also important that local communities should be encouraged to choose measurements of research output that matter to them. The proposed ways of assessing research impact are: (a) change in policies in the health sector, (b) effect on local medical treatment guidelines, (c) effect on case management, (d) us...

In this paper, we will study the same problem without assuming that the leader system is neutrally stable, and the communication network is undirected. The effectiveness of this new result will be illustrated by an example.

The population of Africa first surpassed a billion in 2009 and is expected to add another billion in just 35 years (by 2044)”. It is also a region whose countries are at different levels of development; politically, socially and economically. Politically, at least since the 1990s, most of the countries are moving away from one party forms of governance and military dictatorships to multiparty political dispensations. Socially it has been affected and afflicted by poverty, diseases and internal conflicts that have brought a lot of suffering to its peoples.

The study used a survey method, and targeted head librarians in four types of medical and health libraries from academic, research, special and mission hospital libraries. These libraries serve students, faculty and administrators. A structured self-administered questionnaire was sent via email to fifteen (15) libraries within Nairobi and in surrounding rural areas. Out of the fifteen libraries, ten responded and all the questionnaires were used for data analysis. The results showed that only a small percentage of libraries had policies that enable information literacy integration into the curriculum for examination. Others had no policies but still carried out information literacy activities. The study concluded that there is a ga...

A case study approach was adopted, with the aim of getting detailed information and insights into the experienced problem of inconsistencies and duplication of the data. Structured questionnaires and interview guides were used to collect data. The results show that there is little knowledge sharing and transfer amongst the cataloguers; use of existing rules or standards such as Anglo American Cataloguing Rules and Library of Congress Cataloguing Schedules with its Subject Headings is compromised by the poor grounding of Cataloguers. The study indicates that there is no system in place to manage tacit knowledge; lack of proper training and skills in cataloguing and; not being able to seek help from colleagues; lack the ability of verifying the existence of materials in the database before working on them and simply human error. There is little systematic knowledge sharing and transfer of knowledge among cataloguers. Although there is use of existing standards; this is compromised by lack of knowledge of cataloguing. The study also identifies formulation of policies on the sharing of knowledge.

The knowledge broker role is an intervention dedicated to translating knowledge into action originating from the evidence-based medicine campaign. The Chitambo Emergency Care Communications Project through its knowledge component work strand has visualisations of converting knowledge into action to improve emergency care response by health workers, through the implementation of the knowledge broker role for health care workers in Chitambo district, Central Zambia. Implementation of the knowledge broker activity for Chitambo adopted a framework purposefully designed to build capacity for health librarians by the NationalHealth Service Education for Scotland. The knowledge to action model can be useful in providing the relevant information to improve patient outcomes for healthcare workers. Conception of an African network of knowledge brokers arose out of a knowledge broker project for health care workers initiated at Chitambo District hospital ofChitambo district in Central Zambia by the Friends of Chitambo. The pilot knowledge broker learning course was designed through a collaborative network between organisations in Scotland, the United Kingdom, South Africa and Zambia. The course was set in modules corresponding to elements of the Promoting Action on Research Implementation Framework –Evidence, Context and Facilitation. Formation of the African knowledge broker network was instigated through the course designed for health librarians from Zambia and Zimbabwe. The course has been refined and was to be delivered to six health librarians from Malawi, Rwanda and Zambia in March 2020; which was postponed due to ...

Knowledge production requires a publication outlet in which the knowledge product may be published and made available to the relevant constituency. Once knowledge is produced, it requires utilisation, and critically that the manner in which knowledge is utilised is required for the continuous process of knowledge production. However, it is difficult to measure the impact of a journal that has not been indexed in major international databases. How then, does one decide how important such a journal is to its local community? How does one measure the impact of a journal that does not have traditional measuring metrics, a journal without an Impact Factor? In academia, impact factor metrics have been the internationally accepted norm of measuring research output impact.
