Globalization can be viewed as a process of increased freedom and capacity of individuals and fir... more Globalization can be viewed as a process of increased freedom and capacity of individuals and firms to conduct economic activities with residents of other countries. The driving forces of globalization stem from the reduction in barriers for conducting business across political and geographic barriers, as well as the reduction and convergence of transaction costs via advances in “transport of information.” There is a consensus that innovation and the accompanying progress in information and communication technology (ICT) serve as a catalyst for economic growth. This chapterdiscusses the ICT environment within the Central and Southeastern European (CSEE) counties and the changes in this sector within the European Union (EU). Examination of strategies taken by these nations to improve their economic performance may offer decision makers in other regions some options to deal with impending changes. Particular emphasis is on the efforts of CSEE nations to build a creditable government, reliable political system, and competitive economy. These nations serve as a laboratory for implementing radical changes in their political economy from a centrally planned, one-party system to a democratic market-based system. Specific recommendations include emphasis on effectual dissemination of information between purchasers and suppliers. Information broadcasting is highly related to the creation of an efficient digital system. Specific needs include improved capacity to standardize reports, forms and information transmission functions. Furthermore, IT support and training programs are essential to reduce market distortions.

Creativity and risk-taking, widely accepted prerequisites for successful entrepreneurial behavior... more Creativity and risk-taking, widely accepted prerequisites for successful entrepreneurial behavior, were absent for a long time from Singaporean culture, where people were accustomed to well paying and readily available jobs in the public sector. As a result of the economic slowdown of the late 1990s, promoting entrepreneurial activities became a priority of the Singapore government. This study analyzes the entrepreneurial characteristics of Singapore's multi-racial and multi-cultural society, and attempts to find if there are any reasons as to why some people are more readily willing to engage in entrepreneurial behavior, based on factors such as race, gender, and culture. Keywords: Entrepreneurship, culture, innovation, risk propensity, Singapore

Among the most important are growth and development. These involve the introduction of innovations into the economy-such as new products, productive techniques, or technology. These special factors were analyzed by economist Joseph A. Schumpeter who became known for his contributions to economic theory in the area of innovation and entrepreneurship. This entry introduces Schumpeter's philosophy as well as his theoretical construct of creative destruction. He is often credited for starting modern growth theory that is based on the inevitable by-product of the process of development and innovation. Schumpeter's description of the innovation process and its diffusion continues to be characteristic in the contemporary knowledgeand technologically driven global economy (Carayannis and Ziemnowicz 2007).

This study investigates how managers in forty Guatemalan businesses practice strategic management. Whether the business managers are proactive or reactive in their decisions, they all recognize strategic management as an integral business activity. Two types of businesses, service retail and product retail businesses, are used as the unit of analysis in this research project.

Faculty remain responsible for establishing a learning environment. As specialists, they possess a wealth of knowledge. This knowledge needs to be transferred in an interesting and informative way because some students perceive economics to be boring and inapplicable to their lives. Therefore, the job of the faculty member is made much more challenging. Faculty need to help students overcome barriers to learning. Attempting to motivate students to learn about economics requires that students become engaged in the learning process. Active learning strategies can be an effective teaching method to increase the perceived relevancy of economics courses. Engaging students in the learning process deepens their understanding of economic concepts. Moreover, greater comprehension reduces frustration giving students more self-confidence. Student centered learning can brighten the dismal science by inspiring students to learn conceptually difficult material.
