Materials and Methods: The study, which included 135 subjects selected from the Valle University in Cali, Colombia, and 535 Caucasian subjects selected from the FaceBase–Data (1U01DE024449–01), was funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. All images were taken in the natural head position (NHP) and captured using a stereo-photogrammetric camera system (3dMDface) to obtain a 3D image of each patient. The subjects were between 19 to 31 years of age, with a normal body mass index (BMI), and no craniofacial deformities. Materials and Methods Three hundred one subjects from Zimbabwe and the United States were carefully selected and recruited for the study. Each subject presented with a normal facial profile, no asymmetries, and normal body mass index. The 3D images were captured using the 3dMD cameras. Materials and Methods Three-dimensional images were captured and the total sample size included 371 subjects. Images were combined using Rapidform 2006 Plus Pack 2 software to produce a male and female facial average for each population. Comparisons were conducted within the following categories: (1) gender comparison within each race, (2) adult and adolescent comparison within each race, and (3) adult and adolescent comparison between the races. Results Adolescent gender comparisons within each race showed high percentages of similarity. This study involved 3D stereophotogrammetry to assess the cranial growth, molding, and incidence of deformational plagiocephaly (DP) in preterm children compared to term born children. Thirty-four preterm infants and 34 term born controls were enrolled in this study from Oulu University Hospital, Finland. Three-dimensional head images were obtained at the age of 2–4 months (T1), 5–7 months (T2), 11–13 months (T3), and 2.5–3 years (T4) from the term equivalent age (TEA). There was no statistically significant difference in oblique cranial length ratio (OCLR), cephalic index (CI), or weighted asymmetry score (wAS) between the two groups. The aims of this study were to evaluate sexual dimorphism for facial features within Italian and ... more The aims of this study were to evaluate sexual dimorphism for facial features within Italian and Egyptian populations and to compare the facial morphology by sex between these 2 populations. Three-dimensional (3D) facial images were acquired by using the portable 3dMDface System, which captured 259 subjects from 2 population groups of Italian (n = 139) and Egyptian (n = 120). Each population was categorized into male and female groups for evaluation. All subjects in the groups were aged between 18 and 30 years and had no apparent facial anomalies. A total of 23 anthropometric landmarks were identified on the 3D faces of each subject. The independent t test was used to analyze each data set obtained within each subgroup. Egyptian women tend to have distinct facial features when compared with Italian women; they had less prominent eyes, more nasal width, more height of upper and lower faces and more height of upper and lower vermilion lengths. Egyptian and Italian males demonstrated very close facial features. However, Egyptian males had more nasal width, length of alare, and mandibular height. Sexual dimorphism for facial features was presented in both the Italian and Egyptian populations. In addition, there were significant differences in facial morphology between these 2 populations, especially in females.

The aim of this case report was to present the procedure of fabricating a customized occlusal spl... more The aim of this case report was to present the procedure of fabricating a customized occlusal splint, through a revolutionary software that combines cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) with jaw motion tracking (JMT) data and superimposes a digital impression. The case report was conducted on a 46-year-old female patient diagnosed with the temporomandibular disorder. A CBCT scan and an optical impression were obtained. The range of the patient&amp;amp;#39;s mandibular movements was captured with a JMT device. The data were combined in the SICAT software (SICAT, Sirona, Bonn, Germany). The software enabled the visualization of patient-specific mandibular movements and provided a real dynamic anatomical evaluation of the condylar position in the glenoid fossa. After the assessment of the range of movements during opening, protrusion, and lateral movements all the data were sent to SICAT and a customized occlusal splint was manufactured. The SICAT software provides a three-dimensional real-dynamic simulation of mandibular movements relative to the patient-specific anatomy of the jaw; thus, it opens new possibilities and potentials for the management of temporomandibular disorders.

This case report describes the successful treatment of a 26-year-old Caucasian male with skeletal... more This case report describes the successful treatment of a 26-year-old Caucasian male with skeletal and dental Class III malocclusion associated with mild maxillary and mandibular crowding. The patient had anteroposterior and transverse discrepancies with a reverse overjet and bilateral posterior crossbites. The nonextraction treatment plan included aligning and leveling of the teeth in both arches, Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies, and postsurgical correction of the malocclusion. Orthodontic treatment was initiated with custom lingual appliances followed by orthognathic surgery planned with virtual surgical planning. Treatment was concluded with detailed orthodontic finishing, achieving optimum esthetics and function.

Seventy-eight sets of dental casts that have been presented to the American Board of Orthodontics were evaluated. A Boley gauge was used to measure the length from the mesiobuccal cusp to the distobuccal cusp of the maxillary first molar and the length from the mesiobuccal groove of the mandibular first molar to the occlusal embrasure between the mandibular first and second molars. These two measurements were taken on both sides of each set of dental casts for a total of four measurements per set. The maxillary measurements ranged from 3.6 to 6.9 mm with an average of 5.2 mm. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the immediate effects of RME with Hyrax appliances on the dentoalveolar complex using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Twenty-eight patients (19 females and 9 males) requiring maxillary expansion therapy were included (mean age, 14.1 years; range, 13 to 20 years). CBCT images were taken at T1 (before maxillary expansion) and T2 (immediately after expansion) as part of clinical records. Maxillary arch width, posterior segment angulation, and buccal bone thickness at the level of the first premolar and first molar were evaluated. The mean ± SD amount of expansion achieved was 4.7788 ± 2.8474 mm for the maxillary premolars and 4.6943 ± 3.2198 mm for the molars. Significant tipping of the palatal roots of the maxillary right and left premolars as well as that for the maxillary left molar was observed. When present, the thickness of the buccal plate decreased on all observed roots. There is a significant increase in interpremolar and intermolar distance with RME. The increase in root angulation suggests that the movement is more tipping than translation. The thickness of the buccal plate decreases immediately after RME. Therefore, the level of inflammation should be closely monitored to avoid periodontal destruction. There is a need to define standardized reference planes and comparable methodology to achieve compatible results among studies.

The aims of this study were to evaluate sexual dimorphism for facial features within Italian and ... more The aims of this study were to evaluate sexual dimorphism for facial features within Italian and Egyptian populations and to compare the facial morphology by sex between these 2 populations. Three-dimensional (3D) facial images were acquired by using the portable 3dMDface System, which captured 259 subjects from 2 population groups of Italian (n = 139) and Egyptian (n = 120). Each population was categorized into male and female groups for evaluation. All subjects in the groups were aged between 18 and 30 years and had no apparent facial anomalies. A total of 23 anthropometric landmarks were identified on the 3D faces of each subject. The independent t test was used to analyze each data set obtained within each subgroup. Egyptian women tend to have distinct facial features when compared with Italian women; they had less prominent eyes, more nasal width, more height of upper and lower faces and more height of upper and lower vermilion lengths. Egyptian and Italian males demonstrated very close facial features. However, Egyptian males had more nasal width, length of alare, and mandibular height. Sexual dimorphism for facial features was presented in both the Italian and Egyptian populations. In addition, there were significant differences in facial morphology between these 2 populations, especially in females.

The aim of this case report was to present the procedure of fabricating a customized occlusal spl... more The aim of this case report was to present the procedure of fabricating a customized occlusal splint, through a revolutionary software that combines cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) with jaw motion tracking (JMT) data and superimposes a digital impression. The case report was conducted on a 46-year-old female patient diagnosed with the temporomandibular disorder. A CBCT scan and an optical impression were obtained. The range of the patient&amp;amp;#39;s mandibular movements was captured with a JMT device. The data were combined in the SICAT software (SICAT, Sirona, Bonn, Germany). The software enabled the visualization of patient-specific mandibular movements and provided a real dynamic anatomical evaluation of the condylar position in the glenoid fossa. After the assessment of the range of movements during opening, protrusion, and lateral movements all the data were sent to SICAT and a customized occlusal splint was manufactured. The SICAT software provides a three-dimensional real-dynamic simulation of mandibular movements relative to the patient-specific anatomy of the jaw; thus, it opens new possibilities and potentials for the management of temporomandibular disorders.

The patient had anteroposterior and transverse discrepancies with a reverse overjet and bilateral posterior crossbites. The nonextraction treatment plan included aligning and leveling of the teeth in both arches, Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies, and postsurgical correction of the malocclusion. Orthodontic treatment was initiated with custom lingual appliances followed by orthognathic surgery planned with virtual surgical planning. Treatment was concluded with detailed orthodontic finishing, achieving optimum esthetics and function.

Seventy-eight sets of dental casts that have been presented to the American Board of Orthodontics were evaluated. A Boley gauge was used to measure the length from the mesiobuccal cusp to the distobuccal cusp of the maxillary first molar and the length from the mesiobuccal groove of the mandibular first molar to the occlusal embrasure between the mandibular first and second molars. These two measurements were taken on both sides of each set of dental casts for a total of four measurements per set. The maxillary measurements ranged from 3.6 to 6.9 mm with an average of 5.2 mm. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the immediate effects of RME with Hyrax appliances on the dentoalveolar complex using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Twenty-eight patients (19 females and 9 males) requiring maxillary expansion therapy were included (mean age, 14.1 years; range, 13 to 20 years). CBCT images were taken at T1 (before maxillary expansion) and T2 (immediately after expansion) as part of clinical records. Maxillary arch width, posterior segment angulation, and buccal bone thickness at the level of the first premolar and first molar were evaluated. The mean ± SD amount of expansion achieved was 4.7788 ± 2.8474 mm for the maxillary premolars and 4.6943 ± 3.2198 mm for the molars. Significant tipping of the palatal roots of the maxillary right and left premolars as well as that for the maxillary left molar was observed. When present, the thickness of the buccal plate decreased on all observed roots. There is a significant increase in interpremolar and intermolar distance with RME. The increase in root angulation suggests that the movement is more tipping than translation. The thickness of the buccal plate decreases immediately after RME. Therefore, the level of inflammation should be closely monitored to avoid periodontal destruction. There is a need to define standardized reference planes and comparable methodology to achieve compatible results among studies.
