This collaborative research project was conducted in Greece and the UK. It aimed to understand the work aspirations of a group of vulnerable young people in care and the barriers they face in terms of youth unemployment. The task within this work package was to support young people in foster care using a qualitative participative approach to identify resilience strategies to help other young people in care. Co-producing a resource that is of value to the young people involved in the task in each country was the main deliverable. This report provides a summary of the work conducted and provides an outline of the highly illustrated resources that were developed.

Finding a job is a big challenge for young people at the moment, especially when they experience such complex situations, like being in care. The impact of not having a job can spiral into other challenges such as feeling bad about themselves, not having anywhere to live and no money for the basics. Therefore being able to bounce up (resilience) under these circumstances is really important.

Teenage years are known to be challenging, particularly for girls, but our youngest pupils can also be affected. Schools are at the forefront of dealing with this increase in need and all schools identify children and young people who they are concerned about. While some children and young people have more serious problems requiring specialist mental health services, many children and young people have emerging or lower level needs which require less intense support to help them thrive and achieve their potential. The purpose of this guide is to encourage and build on what good schools already do in terms of differentiation and adapting approaches to include all children and help to maximise their academic and emotional development. Good schools address barriers to academic outcomes, and this guide is designed to support schools in addressing emotional behavioural and emerging mental health problems which can be barriers to attainment. Taking a whole school approach to emotional and mental wellbeing and using some of the simple low cost suggestions for classroom teachers in this guide can support children and young people's sense of belonging to a school and encourage attendance, good development and improve learning outcomes

The consultation gathered views on what should be the priorities for mental health related research sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The stakeholders were people with lived experience of mental health challenges and/or experience of supporting others with such challenges (either in a paid or voluntary working role, or as a friend/family member). The report was commissioned by the ESRC to complement an expert reference group report (December 2015) and other consultations. The not-for-profit Boingboing conducted the ‘Have Your Say' consultation in collaboration with the University of Brighton. We drew on our experience of co-production in research and practice development with diverse and often marginalised groups, including people with lived experiences of mental health challenges. The events were organised and run by people with lived experience of mental health challenges and of supporting...

Resilience was defined as “the outcome from negotiations between individuals and their environments for the resources to define themselves as healthy amidst conditions collectively viewed as adverse” (Ungar, 2004a, p.32). The philosophical approach was critical realist (Bhaskar, 1978) and the methodology used was narrative enquiry, employing content analysis (Lieblich et al., 1998) to elicit mechanisms from the data. Eight young men with previous involvement in the criminal justice system were recruited from organisations in Hastings, East Sussex. They participated in a narrative interview which explored their life stories and the mechanisms utilised to change their offending trajectory. The study used Hart and Blincow’s Resilient Therapy (RT) Framework (2007), to categorise the data. Mechanisms within the framework, located within categories such as Basics, Belonging, Learning, Core Self and Co...
