He believed that experimentation and direct experience with reality would ultimately generate real knowledge and that it was only in this way that a conscious understanding of the world was possible: a requirement for the development of free and democratic people. This paper will analyse how Albers intertwined the ideas of art, education and democracy, and the how he understood these relations within his contemporary world.

A gender pers- pective has been applied to all three aspects with the aim of constructing a general theoretical fra- mework for analysis of this figure. The conclusions demonstrate that this figure, increasingly inserted in the public space, is shaped according to a masculine identity, even when this idea of the artist does not meet the established standards of masculinity.
