Research paper thumbnail of Separation of N-alkyl phenothiazine sulfones by HPTLC using an optimum mobile phase

The selection of mobile phase composition is one of the most important components of an optimization strategies. The aim of this paper is the separation of the N-alkyl phenothiazine sulfones by high performance thin layer chromatography using an optimum mobile phase system. The optimum composition of mobile phase (toluene–ethyl ether–chloroform, 30:50:20, v/v) are given by the maximum of objective function (Fobj=10.6110).

Research paper thumbnail of Determination of the floral origin of some Romanian honeys on the basis of physical and biochemical properties

Spectrochimica Acta Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy, 2013

The evaluated properties were total phenolic content, total protein content, total free amino acids content, color intensity (ABS(450)), pH, ash content, antioxidant activity. Twenty-six commercial honeys from six types of flowers (acacia, sunflower, forest, polyfloral, lime and Sea Buckthorn) were investigated. All samples showed considerable variations with reference to their properties. The properties values were in the range of approved limits (according to EU legislation). The total phenolic, total protein and total free amino acids contents and color intensity varied considerably. Similarly, forest honey had the highest antioxidant activity while the lowest was found in acacia honey. Correlation between the floral origin of honeys and the physical and biochemical properties, respectively, was observed. Moreover, this study demonstrates remarkable variation in DPPH scavenging activity and content of total phenols in honey, depending on its botanic source.

Many functional foodstuff of fruit origin, including red fruit tea, have entered the markets providing new developments in the domain of quality control and food security scientific research. For this reason, the goal of our study was to establish a method for authentication of 12 commercially available fruit teas (raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, rose hip, wild berry) using HPTLC fingerprinting. The HPTLC fingerprints of red fruit and tea extracts obtained in visible light and in fluorescence at 366 nm after the derivatization with Natural Product/Polyethylene glycol (NP/PEG) reagents indicated different characteristic colored zones allowing a clear differentiation between all teas, in terms of their type and producer. Also, a good correlation between the data from chromatograms and type of teas and the producers, respectively, was obtained.
