When considering emergent social issues, youth programming has the potential to integrate concepts from a range of theoretical frameworks, which may help youth transform into social change activists and competent movers. Such critical perspectives may guide sport and physical education programming as contemporary society poses numerous challenges concerning youths' diverse emotional, mental, physical, and social needs. In order to advance knowledge and practice, we urge researchers and practitioners to rethink the way sport and physical education has been traditionally conceptualized. Ultimately, we propose that educating ind...

Despite the focus of recent studies on the preparation of physical education (PE) teachers for entering the profession, little attention has been paid to beginner teachers and how these teachers can promote educationally rich PE experiences. Therefore, this study sought (1) to understand how a novice PE teacher implemented the cooperative learning model and shared the responsibility for teaching–learning processes with students; and (2) to examine students’ perspectives about their cooperative experiences and student-centered learning. Participants included 25 high school students and one novice PE teacher. Through an action-research design, data were collected by utilizing three qualitative techniques and analyzed using thematic analysis. CL was found to be a complex model that needed tim...

The specific objectives comprised the examination of the mediation strategies used by the teacher for developing the student-coaches' positive and inclusive leadership and ability to conduct instructional interactions that involved teammates actively in problem-solving processes and construction of the learning experience. An action research design sustained by a longitudinal data collection protocol was used for its epistemological potential to cope with the shifting and ongoing engaging nature of the relational dynamics and instructional and knowledge development in Sport Education. Cyclical and intertwined data collection and analysis employing video observations, a field diary, and group interviews were used to analyse the changeable development of the teaching-learning process. This dissertation showed that the application of protocols for coaching preparation enabled the development of learning outcomes through peer-led instruction. The proactive building of inclusion upon the pedagogical structures of Sport Education helped promoting a more equitable learning context. The studentcoaches' ability to actively involve teammates in analysis and discovery-based processes were noticed essentially from the third season onwards, which overlapped with students' development of higher-order tactical content and more adaptive game-play. The longitudinal design along with the thematic grouping of games enabled the transfer of knowledge across seasons. The action research design was critical for allowing the continuous and contingent (re)adjustment of the teacher's mediation strategies to the ongoing progresses. The main goal of this paper was to conduct a systematized analysis of two decades of research on sport education in order to identify critical conceptual and methodological concerns and inform future directions for practice and research toward development of a more matured model. The scope of this essay includes a contextualization of the contemporary shift from teacher-centred to student-centred approaches for teaching physical education; the conceptual roots, structural features, and educational goals of sport education; the thematic and methodological examination of empirical research on the model; and conclusions and future avenues for research. Two main areas of intervention were identified: the need to safeguard competency development through coaching preparation protocols and in-depth examination of instructional interactions conducted by student-coaches; and the examination of, and intervention upon, the power and relational dynamics operation during peer interactions that either restrain or facilitate students' access to more equitable and inclusive participation. It is suggested that the adoption of a transformative agenda through action research designs, ethnographic, case study, and longitudinal data collection protocols are indispensable key vehicles for enhancing the model.

Research paper thumbnail of Encouraging Renewable Energy Consumption Through Dynamic Pricing

Proceedings of ICT for Sustainability 2016, 2016

Smart Grids are important for energy sustainability and environmental preservation avoiding the non-renewable energy consumption since decentralized suppliers are able to supply energy demands through renewable energy. It will be possible to encourage renewable energy consumption using a dynamic pricing adopting different prices to each energy source. Some network and security issues arise with that network communication like if it will be able to calculate the price in a suitable time interval. So a challenge is to analyze the impact of ICT on this operation. We analyzed the impact of a dynamic pricing on consumption changes and energy generation, and the delay time to calculate the price in a clustered network architecture.

Twenty-six seventh grade students participated in four consecutive seasons of sport education (basketball, handball, soccer, and volleyball). The research involved four action-research iterative cycles of planning, acting, monitoring, and reflecting. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews with teams and exclusively with the student–coaches, lesson observations, and a field diary kept by the first author, who assumed the role of practitioner–rese...

The participants were an experienced Physical Education teacher and two sixth-grade classes totaling 47 students (25 boys and 22 girls). Each class was randomly placed in either Sport Education or Direct Instruction classes and participated in 20, 45-minutes lessons focused on shot put, hurdles and triple jump. Knowledge on athletics was assessed through a 25-items written and video-based test. The inter-group differences and improvements across time in the knowledge test were analyzed through the Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests, respectively. There were significant knowledge improvements in both instructional approaches irrespective of students' gender and skill level. In Direct Instruction, the type of task organization, the high rates of repetition of movement patterns and feedback ...

Research paper thumbnail of Encouraging Renewable Energy Consumption Through Dynamic Pricing
