Along a 240-m-thick package in the upper part of Tremembé Formation, thirteen chemostratigraphic units with thicknesses varying from 10 to 35 m were identified. The upper interval (unit L), 30 m thick, exhibited the highest organic content and original generation potential and was thus studied in detail. In unit L, oil yield maps were constructed, seeking to identify the most attractive areas for industrially exploiting the oil shales, and volumetric calculations employing a probabilistic Monte Carlo method were conducted to quantify the potentially recoverable oil volume. Three exploratory scenarios based on yield values (S1 + S2) were considered for calculating the oil vol...

The xanthan gum and rhamnolipid produced exhibited excellent viscosity and emulsifying activity characteristics, and better pseudoplasic rheological behaviour than conventional chemical EOR compounds. EOR benefits of incremental oil production, coupled with the use of waste products to produce the compounds employed, minimize the environmental impact of EOR methods employing such compounds.

The thermal effects of an igneous intrusion on organic-rich sedimentary rocks can be considering ... more The thermal effects of an igneous intrusion on organic-rich sedimentary rocks can be considering an important source of maturation of organic matter. The Permian Irati Formation of Paraná Basin (Brazil) is a carbonatic and organic-rich shale sequence intruded by Jurassic-Cretaceous basic rocks. This study reports possible effects of igneous intrusion on the organic matter content of Irati Formation, in Sapopema region (Paraná State). Total organic carbon (TOC), total sulfur (S) and insoluble residue (IR) data were combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The relatively low TOC values recorded in well where Irati Formation is in contact with 60 m of diabase sill (SP-58-PR) are residuals, associated with the depletion of organic carbon, caused by the thermal effect from the overlying intrusive rock. It was responsible to promote the cracking of the organic matter and reduced those values in relation to the original ones, observed in SP...

The oil and gas industry was already facing a challenging transition process as economies move toward a low-carbon future; however, surviving and prospering in a low-oil-price and high-risk environment is an even greater and more urgent challenge. Producers with relatively high-cost production will bear the brunt of production curtailments, since none are able to sustain uneconomic production for very long. In the years leading to 2019, shale plays stole the show, increasing production as long as prices sustained the frantic pace of drilling required for the production increases observed in the US. On the other hand, the intrinsic characteristics of deepwater plays - highly front-loaded investments and long project cycles - worked against them. Relatively low prices that were just as challenging for shale plays were considered a reason to delay deepwater projects (Rigzone 2016). Portfolio diversification i...
Scientific and technological advances in telecommunications and onboard electronics, and advances... more Scientific and technological advances in telecommunications and onboard electronics, and advances in sustainability standards, dictated major changes to various industrial sectors, including the automotive industry, where hard and soft approaches to manufacturing are vying for market dominance. This work presents a prospective analysis of the autonomous vehicle (AV) market, analyzing three of the main US AV technology firms, Tesla, Waymo and Apple. Their designs and solutions are compared, and prospective scenarios were constructed based on an analysis of their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT). The results suggest that Tesla currently exhibits the greatest market leadership in the group studied. However, it was concluded that in the medium term, Waymo would surpass Tesla and assume market leadership. In the long run, it was concluded that Apple will overcome its rivals and dominate this market.
The objective of any exploratory campaign in a geologic province with known accumulations of oil ... more The objective of any exploratory campaign in a geologic province with known accumulations of oil and gas is to determine where to drill, given the expected number and size of the accumulations present. Modern tools for modeling the exploratory process are complex software that make use of the available information about past exploratory history of the play being studied, while also applying the acquired geologic knowledge about specific parameters of the play, in order to provide estimates of the statistical distribution of the number and size of accumulations which remain to be found (yet-to-find-oil). A further refinement to this methodology is the incorporation of the concept of area exhausted by past exploratory efforts, as an adjustment to the estimation process carried out by exploratory process modeling tools.
