Employee training and development has become one of the key aspects in improving employee performance in organisations, thus leading to improved organizational performance and growth. The study investigated the relationship between the quality of employee training and development on service delivery in a selected municipality with data collected from 150 employees. The results indicated the need for effective employee training and development systems and processes to achieve improved employee performance thus improved provision of basic services to the communities.

The nursing sector has one of the highest in employee turnover around the world. Looking into work engagement and work meaningfulness can be used as mitigating factors which organisations can consider to curb turnover. In the Namibian context literature on nurses’ engagement and work meaningfulness is inadequate. A cross-sectional survey design was used. A total of n=168 nurses from Rundu hospitals and clinics, participated in the study. Findings revealed that there is no statistically significant relationship between turnover and work-engagement (r=0.095; p=0.222) of nurses in Rundu, Namibia. Findings also revealed that there is no statistically significant relationship between turnover and work-meaningfulness (r=-0.003; p=0.966) of nurses in Rundu, Namibia. A positive and statistically significant relationship between work-engagement and work-meaningf...

The aim of this project is to inspire and create access to Science, Engineering and Technology through robotics, mentoring and social media. Robotics introduces the engineering fundamentals and programming principles, and also develops 21st century skills (problem solving, critical thinking, and collaborative learning). Mentoring is accomplished through community engagement and outreach, by learners, students, educators, academics and community leaders. Social media provides the opportunities for robotics teams of learners to communicate, collaborate, share content and compete. We are introducing a new robotics competition that avoids the challenges of distance and the costs to travel and allows teams to meet other teams locally, nationally and internationally through the use of digi...

A mixed-method approach was utilised. In the quantitative phase of the study, a sample of 536 high school learners in South Africa filled out the Career Interest Inventory (Fisher & Stafford, 1999) in understanding factors that influence career decisions. Phase two sought to understand qualitatively how the identified factors from phase one influence the enactment of career decisions using focus groups with 60 learners drawn from the sample in phase one. Results from phase one showed that learners' career decisions were highly influenced by academic experiences and self-efficacy, parents, teachers, and peers, respectively. Learners perceived ethnic-gender expectations and negative social events as having low levels of influence when making career decisions. Female learners are significantly more highly influenced by parents, teachers, acade...

Students' academic performance at tertiary institutions is affected by stress and their levels of motivation. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of stress, motivation and teaching styles of lecturers on first year students' academic performance. This is because reducing students' stress levels and finding ways to increase their levels of motivation would result in better academic performance; a greater understanding of factors underlying academic stress is believed to lead to improved stress management strategies and academic success; and this understanding would facilitate the development of

An empirical model linking the real exchange rate and interest rate differential is instigated to its theoretical determinants is then specified. The study utilizes the VECM methodology to provide both the long run and short run dynamic effects on the trade balance movements. Variables under investigation, (TOT, REER, IR, and IRS) were found to be statistically significant with the trade balance. The VECM model found 3 cointegrating equations and the most interesting result that came from this analysis is the co-movements of real effective exchange rate and interest rates differentials among the 3 cointegrating equations.

Employees with low levels of neuroticism experience higher levels of job satisfaction. The banking environment requires employees with low levels of neuroticism due to the nature of services they offer. A quantitative technique was adopted, to determine the relationship between neuroticism and job satisfaction SAS 9.1, Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient, ANOVA and Waller- Duncan K-ratio T-Test and T-Test were used. Findings indicated employees had low level of criticism and were satisfied with their jobs. However the level of neuroticism was influenced by demographic variable (age, race, and bank) but this did not have any significant impact on overall job satisfaction. The findings will aid management institutions in selecting, and retaining employees as higher job satisfaction is linked to higher levels of productivity, effectiveness and commitment

The purpose of this study was to investigate employer and employees’ perceptions on the implementation of OHS regulations in the Platinum mining industry in South Africa. Using questionnaires, data was collected from 22 employers and 153 employees in the platinum mining industry. The data was subjected to a number of statistical analyses including one way ANOVA. Findings from the research indicated that even though employers and employees have a positive perception on implementation of OHS regulations, there is still a mismatch between implementation and execution of the policies. Consequently, many suggestions are not always turned into actual action to maintain the OHS of employees. Key words: Perceptions, implementation, safety and health.

Growth in the industry puts pressure on call centre employees as the job becomes highly demanding and their tasks increase. Introducing the positive aspects of psychological capital allows for someone to better deal with the daily challenges of a highly demanding job. The relationship between job demands and psychological capital is lacking in literature as it has not been extensively studied. The paper explores the moderating effect of psychological capital on the relationship between burnout and job demand amongst a selection of call centre employees in Windhoek, Namibia. Questionnaires were distributed to call centre employees and n=156 employees participated in the study. Results showed that job demand was significantly negatively correlated to burnout (r= -1.79; p= 0.028); Psychological Capital (PsyCap) was significantly positively related to job demands (r= 0.425; p= 0.000); psychological capital and burnout (r= 0.013; p= 0...

The aim of this study is to compare the manners in which Afrikaans first language (L1) and Sesotho first language (L1) speakers make requests when speaking English. The Cross Cultural Speech Act Realization Project (CCSARP) framework of Blum-Kulka was utilized to analyze the requests made by these two groups. The outcomes revealed that Afrikaans speakers used fewer politeness and alert markers as compared to Sesotho speakers who utilized more. The implications of these findings are also discussed.

South Africa needs young entrepreneurs, not job seekers. However, in order to adapt, graduates must rely on psychological resources to succeed in their entrepreneurial ventures and pursuits. Using the TPB and Psychological capital (Psycap), the researchers explored the influence of planned behaviour and Pyscap on entrepreneurial intention of 270 final year students in the Management and Commerce faculty at a selected university in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data as the researchers opted for a survey design. Results of hierarchical multiple regression modelling showed that entrepreneurial intentions is positively influenced by perceived behavioural control (β1 = 0.367; p = <0.0001) attitudes towards becoming an entrepreneur (β2 =...
