The printing of the first edition of William Tyndale's English New Testament began surreptitiousl... more The printing of the first edition of William Tyndale's English New Testament began surreptitiously in Cologne, but was terminated through the efforts of the anti-Lutheran activist priest Johann Cochlaeus and the Cologne patrician Hermann Rinck. Cochlaeus wrote three accounts of the affair, brief ones in 1533 and 1538, and a detailed one in 1549. In the first two accounts he dated it 1525, and in the last account he dated it 1526. Scholars unanimously accepted his final dating until 1845, when the Scottish biblical historian Christopher Anderson argued for Cochlaeus' earlier date. Since then there has been a nearunanimous scholarly consensus that 1525 was indeed the year of the affair. I seek to show that in fact the affair occurred entirely in 1526, beginning no earlier than January 23 and concluding no later than the first days of March.

The first Bible printed in mainstream Dutch has been thought to be the 1526 Van Liesvelt Bible, a... more The first Bible printed in mainstream Dutch has been thought to be the 1526 Van Liesvelt Bible, a folio. However, the first title-page of a well-known four-volume 1525 decimo sexto Dutch Old Testament for which no matching New Testament has hitherto been identified claims to introduce a complete Bible. This article demonstrates that a 1525 decimosexto Dutch New Testament of which a single copy survives, in Zurich, is the missing volume. Most notably, it shows that the Old Testament volumes, this New Testament, and a Maccabees supplement for the Old Testament, were printed with the same type, and used a temporary, project-specific pool of decorative letters, with some of the letters belonging to the printing shop which did the printing, and some belonging to the publishing syndicate. The article further shows that one member of the syndicate was the international book merchant and publisher Franz Birckman.

There could surely be no more remarkable Australian alive; and certainly none who has exerted so beneficent an influence for so protracted a time. Bob Santamaria's continuing intellectual development, even to this day, becomes clear when one traces the evolution of his thought through the three most important periodicals he has founded: the Catholic Worker (1936); Freedom (now News Weekly) (1943); and AD 2000 (1988).

Two extant early Dutch printed scriptural editions, both in mainstream Dutch, name Hans van Rurem... more Two extant early Dutch printed scriptural editions, both in mainstream Dutch, name Hans van Ruremund as their printer: a four-volume 1525 Old Testament in decimosexto, and a September 1525 New Testament in octavo. A 1526 New Testament in the Low Saxon dialect in a decimosexto format of which no copies are extant also named Van Ruremund as its printer. However, beginning with Isaac Le Long in 1732, a succession of major scriptural bibliographers have ascribed to Van Ruremund the printing of addi tional mainstream Dutch New Testament editions, variously of 1522 and 1526.1 seek to show that they were mistaken, and why each erred.
