This was a cross-sectional study of 266, 10 years old, children recruited from schools in 3 locations in Greece. Data were collected via questionnaires and clinical examination. Questionnaires referred to Children's oral hygiene knowledge, behavior and attitude as well as parents' oral hygiene behavior and educational level. Children were clinically examined by two calibrated pediatric dentists using a WHO probe and artificial light to assess dental plaque (hygiene index-HI), gingivitis (simplified gingival index-GIs) and dental caries (DMFT-BASCD criteria). Regarding oral hygiene knowledge, although 80% of the children were literate of the proper means of oral hygiene, only 58.64% brushed their teeth twice daily and 36.84% used dental floss. Children's oral hygiene knowledge was positively correlated with both p...

To evaluate the effectiveness of sealant treatment in preventing dental restorations due to carie... more To evaluate the effectiveness of sealant treatment in preventing dental restorations due to caries in a practice-based research network in Finland, Sweden, and Greece. Times of tooth emergence, sealing treatment, and dental caries were compiled from the dental charts of 4735 subjects born in 1970-72 in Finland and in 1980-82 in Finland, Sweden, and Greece. Survival time between tooth emergence and placement of first restoration was measured and estimated using survival analysis methodology. At the end of follow-up (7-10+ years), 30-40% of sealed molars and 60-80% of non-sealed molars were restored. Early sealant placement compared to late sealing did not result in significantly higher survival of 1st molars. The strategy of sealing the 1st molars only in high caries risk subjects was as effective as sealing all the molars and premolars routinely without caries risk determination. The sealing of all molar fissures proved to be no more effective than sealing risk fissures of subjects....

The proposed method consists of three steps: (a) detection of decalcification areas, (b) detection of occlusal caries areas, and (c) fusion of the results. The detection process includes pre-processing of the images, segmentation and post-processing, where objects not corresponding to areas of interest are eliminated through the utilization of rules expressing the medical knowledge. The preprocessing, segmentation and post-processing are differentiated depending on the areas that have to be detected (decalcification or occlusal areas). The method was evaluated using a set of 60 images where 286 areas of interest were manually segmented by an expert. The obtained sensitivity and precision is 92% and 80%, respectively.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of oral health status on the quality of life of adults in different regions of Greece, using the Oral Health Impact Profile-short form (OHIP-14). Methods. A random sample consisting of a total of 504 Greek adults between the ages of 35-44 years (mean 39.1 ± 3.5) was selected from different urban and rural areas, and face-to-face interviews were conducted using the validated Greek language OHIP-14. Associations of the total OHIP-14 score and its 7 sub-scales along with the self-perceived quality of life were evaluated with Spearman's correlations. Results. The subjects had an overall weighted OHIP-14 score of 1.1 (sd 1.9). No significant differences were found for either rural or non-metropolitan areas when compared to urban or metropolitan regions. High scores of above 2 were determined for functional limitation, physical pain, handicap, and the psychological discomfort scales. The education level of the subject...

Although the disease is well described in the dental literature and is usually associated with an odontogenic infection resulting from caries, a number of other causative factors have been occasionally reported, such as a dental extraction or a mild periodontitis. There have also been cases of unknown aetiology. This paper describes a case of Garre's osteomyelitis in an 8-year-old child, in whom the condition arose following a local periodontal infection in an ectopically erupting first permanent molar that was in infraocclusion. The lesion remained unresolved for a period of over 6 months as a result of misdiagnosis, following a number of unsuccessful treatment attempts. Identification of the true cause and treatment through periodontal surgery resulted in lesion resolution and resolved the diagnostic problem. Dentists should be aware that the periodontium may be a pote...

It was also intended to evaluate what dentists and pediatricians tell parents when they examine children with nursing caries. 260 children, ages 3-5 (130 with nursing caries, NC group, and 130 without, NNC group) participated in the study. 95% of the NC group used the bottle at night. In the control, although 85% of the group used the bottle, none of the children developed nursing caries. 1) The nursing habit of bottle feeding is not the only factor determining the development of nursing caries. 2) Falling asleep with the bottle seems to be the most determinant factor associated with the development of nursing caries. 3) Breastfeeding of the child for more than 40 days may act preventively and inhibit the development of nursing caries in children.

Furthermore, changes in the rearing practices of children make management of such habits even more complicated. The purpose of the present study was to investigate finger and pacifier sucking habits among pre-school children, and its possible relationship to nursing behavior. Parental attitudes towards sucking habits were also registered. Questionnaires were sent to parents of 600 children, three to five years old, following an oral examination in a private office. Children attended kindergartens that were randomly selected from the area of Athens, Greece. Questions regarding the nursing patterns-breast or bottle feeding-characteristics of finger and pacifier sucking habits, parental attitudes towards sucking habits, as well as recommendations of t...

Despite the marked craniofacial characteristics and oral findings, a relative lack of reports in the dental literature has been noted. In this article, a review of the literature regarding the general clinical features and differential diagnosis is presented. A case of a 3-year-old female is reported with special consideration on the management of her dental problems under general anesthesia. The anesthetic risks of such a procedure as well as the prognosis of her dental development are being discussed.

However, the etiologic role of hypertrophied adenoids and tonsils in developing an aberrant dentofacial growth is not clear, yet. The present investigation attempted to study the incidence of maxillary posterior crossbite and oral habits, in a sample of 120 children, that displayed hypertrophied adenoids with or without enlarged tonsils, and underwent adenoidectomy. An attempt was also made to relate the presence of crossbite to the severity of upper respiratory airway obstruction. The severity of airway obstruction was assessed using radiographic and surgical criteria. A lateral cephalometric radiograph was obtained and studied for each patient. Results indicated, that 47% of the children examined, had developed a posterior crossbite. The presence of crossbite was high in children with severe ...

The technique of enamel acid etching has made adhesion to enamel possible. In addition, extensive research has allowed the development of dentine-bonding agents, materials that are claimed to bond to dentine. The first and second generation of these products, despite their early success and popularity, pose several problems, including a weak and unstable bond in the oral environment. During the last decade, a number of systems, known as the third generation of dentine-bonding agents, have been marketed. They base their bonding ability on the utilization of the organic part of a pre-treated dentine. In vitro studies have reported significantly higher bond strength, and reduced microleakage and marginal gap formation. Biocompatibility and toxicity studies have demonstrated no direct harmful effect on the pulp. Clinical trials have shown promising clinical performance. These products can offer ...

The dental needs, the type and the cost of treatment of these children and especially those of the district of Athens have not been evaluated before. The purpose of this study was to determine these needs and evaluate the aforementioned parameters. The results of this study have shown that from the 1166 children aged 6-12 years of age, 71.6% have some problems with caries. There has been an increasing rate of the total dental needs of primary and permanent teeth from the age of 6 through the age of 12, for both sexes, although the dit index decreased after the age of 8 years.
