In the context of science and technology, numbers have given humans vast power over our physical surroundings. At the same time, however, we harbor a fundamental misperception (even a superstition) about what numbers are, and what we can reasonably expect from them. Numbers alone can never tell us with certainty why the world is the way it is, for in the process of abstracting numbers away from dogs and cats and hats, we sever their link with the real world.
