It seems to be a persistent problem, and one to which there are no simple solutions. In order to combat loneliness in society, we first need to understand this complex phenomenon better. Is loneliness associated with old age, for example? Are those with support needs more susceptible to feelings of loneliness? Does having a wide circle of friends help protect people against loneliness? Does loneliness make people unhappy? This study provides an insight into trends relating to loneliness in society as a whole, and in the course of an individual’s life. It focuses particularly on the cases of three vulnerable groups: older persons, nursing home residents and people who receive support under the Wmo (Social Support Act). The study also explores the underlying factors that, in combination, can exacerbate feelings of loneliness.

Artists and scientists in these fields share a common interest in human perception. In the arts, synesthesia refers to a range of phenomena of simultaneous perception of two or more stimuli as one gestalt experience (van Campen 2007). In neuroscience, synesthesia is more strictly defined as “the elicitation of perceptual experiences in the absence of the normal sensory stimulation” (Ward & Mattingley 2006: 130). About one in twenty-three persons has a type of ‘neurological’ synesthesia (Simner et al. 2006). Over 50 types have been reported (Day 2008), and people differ in intensity of the experience (cf. Dixon et al. 2004). The most common type of synesthesia is colored weekdays, while the type of perceiving colored letters and numbers is most studied by scientists, and the type of co...

Little is known about the needs and views of older people themselves. At the same time, there is growing political and public attention for older people and for this theme. SCP is therefore publishing a policy report on Valentine’s Day which looks at intimacy, sexuality and diversity among older residents of institutions. Drawing on data collected for the 2015 edition of the study ‘Older people in institutions’ (Ouderen in instellingen 2015), we describe intimacy and sexuality among older people. We examine the needs of older people for romantic or sexual contact, the relationship between those needs and broad quality of life, their views on diversity and homosexuality and the position of lesbian, gay and bisexual residents of nursing and care homes.

Life in Dutch residential nursing and care homes is changing. The number of frail older persons in the Netherlands is increasing. Older people are increasingly living independently for longer, and only the most frail older persons move to a nursing or care home. Media reports about the care provided in these nursing and care homes are not always universally positive and, partly as a result of those reports, Dutch people are concerned about the quality of care and the lives of residents. To compile this report, SCP researchers conducted extensive interviews with more than 950 residents of Dutch nursing and care homes located throughout the country. They asked residents about their experiences and opinions regarding the quality of their lives (happiness, loneliness, meaning of life) and the quality of the care they receive (privacy, autonomy, being treated with respect, safety). People with severe dementia could of course not be interviewe...

Synesthetes report they use their colored letters to memorize names and use their colored time lines to plan their diaries. Does the memory of synesthetes work different from that of nonsynesthetes? To answer this question three sources of information on synesthesia and memory were reviewed: 1) laboratory experiments, 2) in-depth interviews, and 3) autobiographical novels. Laboratory experiments with synethetes (individuals and groups) show that some synesthetes have an extraordinary recall but, on the average, synesthetes and non-synesthetes perform equally on recall tests. In-depth interviews show that synesthetic perceptions can enhance the emotional charge of childhood memories, help in evoking vivid, empathic memories that sometimes are therapeutic, and are influential on constructing the memory picture (e.g. its colors). The novelists Proust and Nabokov show, in their long-term analyses of their childhood memories, that these are physically very vivid evocations of the past, but in no way factual like photographs. Memorizing is a way of mentally and physically reliving and reconstructing the past from the present perspective. The self-declared synesthete Nabokov did not differ much from the nonsynesthete Proust in this respect. It is concluded that the memory of synesthetes in general does not work very differently from nonsynesthetes, but some individuals have developed an extraordinary memory by using their synesthetic perception as mnemonic tool, as a anthropological resource for orientation to navigate through the past, and as a sensibility to empathize and understand it.
