According to this approach, players displaying higher cognitive anxiety or extreme scores (too high or too low) on somatic anxiety or lower selfconfidence prior to the game perform more poorly. However, previous research has argued that the relationship between anxiety and performance also depends on the characteristics of the task. Thus, it has been suggested that there are optimal levels of anxiety for each type of motor skill, which leads to higher performance. Generally, tasks demanding high physical effort are facilitated by high levels of anxiety while tasks demanding accuracy are better accomplished when anxiety is relatively low. In the case of table tennis, it is possible to suggest that it demands both high physical effort and accuracy; therefore this study was conducted to investigate the relationship between precompetitive state anxiety and performance in table tenn...

It is known that emotional difficulties during childhood and youth increase the risk of the later development of mental health problems. It is also known that there are potential risk-taking behaviours affecting health that are associated with the most disadvantaged groups of young people, such as smoking, drinking, substance misuse and abuse, and violence; which emphasise the need for intervention strategies targeting those specific groups. This thesis presents alternative ways of promoting social and emotional competence for students in disadvantaged communities across Queensland with the goal of increasing the reach of an existing evidence-based interventionthe FRIENDS for Life program. It aims to do so by providing training to teachers, school counsellors, guidance officers, and chaplains, enabling them to become group facilitators in delivering the FRIENDS for Life program in their schools. Three well-known community risk factors were targeted: vii Financial support

The FRIENDS program has been extensively tested and showed promising results not only for preventing childhood anxiety but also for improving students’ self-concept, social skills and coping skills. However, when it comes to communities in disadvantage the results are mixed, with some studies reporting the need to include enhancements to the context in which the program is implemented to better support communities at risk. A combined intervention aiming to promote students’ social-emotional skills was piloted in a school located in a low socio-economic status area. Teachers received training to teach social and emotional skills for students and a Resilience Program for themselves. Students’ social-emotional outcomes were assessed at pre, post, 3 and 6 months following th...

The focus of the intervention was to train/coach teachers with strategies to develop social and emotional skills for students. A single group, pre/post-test design was used to conduct a preliminary investigation of the intervention to improve participants’ social and emotional outcomes. At the end of the intervention, students who were at risk showed significant decrease in their anxiety levels and teacher’s demonstrated significant improvements on their emotional resilience.

Mood descriptors were converted into Portuguese using the translation-back translation method. The revised scale was administered on two occasions to 298 participants in Brazil (173 males and 125 females; age: M = 18.3, SD = 5.1 yr.). Exploratory factor analysis recovered the hypothesized, 6-factor solution (anger, confusion, depression, fatigue, tension, vigour) at Time 1 and Time 2, explaining 68% and 72% of variance, respectively. Subscales for depression, fatigue, and vigour were recovered cleanly in both solutions; whereas the anger, confusion, and tension scales showed some complexity. Cronbach alpha coefficients were acceptable for all subscales at T1 (range = .76-.85) and T2 (range = .79-.90). Confirmatory factor analysis showed support for the measurement model, although some values were marginal (χ 2 /df: T1 = 2.
