Their algorithm, based on a model for the supplier's formulation of the price schedule, involves a regression analysis to identify the supplier's variable cost per unit and the fixed cost that the supplier seeks to recover, followed by an iterative search for the optimum. The authors describe this method as a “convenient alternative to the aimless searching of traditional approaches” [5, p. 101]. We examine the allegation of superiority of their total setup lot-sizing model over the classical method and dispute their claim of superiority.

The object-oriented (OO) paradigm presents a fundamental change in how AIS data can be viewed, modeled, and manipulated. The majority of accounting research in OO constructs an object model directly from a COA. We contend that such direct mapping does not capture the full potential of OO and data disaggregation. The purpose of our article is to propose and evaluate a methodology that creates an accounting object model directly from a set of accounting transactions. The approach uses a semi-automated natural language method to significantly decrease the development time to build an object model, while simultaneously increasing the model's consistency and auditability. The object model created is measured, using function point analysis, and compared to the corresponding entity-relationship model. Our method produces a measurably less complex AIS than traditiona...

Such a schedule provides a roadmap and calendar of tests, measurements, and evaluations. Normally, such a schedule is created after a protocol has been mostly created. Our aim is to demonstrate that the SOA can have a broader usage: that of a quality improvement (QI) tool used during protocol creation, thus helping to ensure a high-quality protocol at the design. When creating a protocol conflicting uses of the Protocol contribute to operational tension. For example, Trial Operations, which wishes to minimize the complexity of the trial, may debate with Clinical Science, who wish to collect the greatest amount of scientific tests and data. The more complex a set of requirements in the protocol, there is a corresponding drop in available sites able to meet those needs. Additionally potential sites may comment about being burdened with tests that are unnec...

High risk decisions and decision-makers, in this case, are police officers deciding whether or not to arrest an individual based on information provided via computer from a distant source. There are three critical research pillars for this research. First, the impact on performance of naturalistic decision-making (NDM) research described for high-risk decision making through the use of a recognition-primed decision (RPD) model (Klein 1998) will be observed. Next, media richness posits richer media has more impact on equivocal tasks. Media of different “richness” was tested for impacts on decision performance. The recognition primed decision model, portions of media richness, and information thresholds are integrated to provide a model to relate information latency effects on high-risk decision-making. This model was evaluated using three wireles...

To study this complex phenomenon, we begin by identifying some primary topo- logical structures that SNs may form. Then, to investigate the evolu- tion of such structures, a theory-based framework is developed that combines aspects of complex adaptive systems theory, industrial growth theory, network theory, market structure, and game theory. This framework specifies categories of rules that may evoke differ- ent behaviors in the two fundamental components of any adaptive SN, i.e., the environment and the firms in that environment. The framework is implemented as a multiparadigm simulation utiliz- ing software agents and it joins discrete-time with discrete-event simulation formalisms. This methodology allows the spontaneous generation of network structures so that it is possible to examine the potential factors ...

To address this issue, the authors propose a model for measuring the return on investment (ROI) of one key CTSA program, the clinical research unit (CRU). By estimating the economic and social inputs and outputs of this program, this model produces multiple levels of ROI: investigator, program, and institutional estimates. A methodology, or

The paper discusses the detailed behavioral modeling of the key components in the model with the help of statechart and decision tree representations. The design of a distributed, multi-paradigm, agent-based simulation that addresses the issue of scalability and computational efficiency is presented. The system is targeted to run on a supercomputing grid infrastructure at Vanderbilt University. We present a method for validating this model using an experimental design that models the growth dynamics of the US automobile industry supply network over the past 80 years. The experimental

In this research we use a complex adaptive systems based framework to grow and evolve supply chain networks to answer the question. We are using an agent-based hybrid simulation (discrete time and discrete event) methodology to implement the framework. Preliminary results and analysis show an underlying structure to the origin, growth and evolution of supply chains. I. Introduction Why is the supply chain structure of the florist industry so different from those found in the manufacturing sector? The florist industry has a vast number of retail outlets, with a correspondingly vast number of suppliers. The manufacturing sector, such as in the automobile sectors, is composed of few major manufacturers, more direct suppliers, and a large number of tiers. Are there certain simple decision- making rules used by individual firms that result in these diverse structures? Limi...

Little is known about why such a diversity of supply chain structures exist. Simulating dynamic supply chain networks over extended periods using the multiparadigm dynamic system simulator allows us to observe the emergence of different structures. The simulator is implemented using a software agent technology, where individual agents represent firms in a supply chain network. In this paper, we present an example scenario run on the simulator and the preliminary results that have been observed. This multi-paradigm tool provides a valuable investigation instrument for real life supply chain problems.

Cancer Council Victoria awards funding to clinical trial sites through its Clinical Trials Management Scheme (CTMS). With this state-wide scheme, there appeared to be a temporal relationship between growth or stability in funding and the number of patients recruited. We undertook a RCT to evaluate the hypothesis that additional funding would improve trial recruitment. Methods: Participating sites (n = 34) were stratified into four strata based on 2011 recruitment numbers. Control sites (n = 18) received usual CTMS funds only while intervention sites (n = 16) received usual funds plus additional funds, proportional to the number of patients recruited in 2011. Additional funding was a median increase of 300% (IQR: 112.5%, 459%) relative to usual CTMS funds and was an average 11.8% (IQR: 8%, 12.3%) increase in a site’s budget. Additional funds were provided in early 2013. Sites were to use funds with the aim of increas...
