Instead of considering this system from a functional point of view or from an economical one etc., we chose to consider the system just as a signifying object whose meaning is to be a space system whatever the point of view we select. We are therefore led to propose multiviewpoints semiotics to analyse and specify the conditions which allows virtual views of the systems to correspond to one and the same object. We introduce the concept of identity in order to formulate such conditions. Epistemological justifications are proposed.

Then, the paper describes how the filtering of risky components of a technical documentation is performed. It is based on the confrontation of the vocabulary of the different documents to an ontology of “criticality” built by the authors. The paper also describes how the knowledge evolutions are detected and how the interpretation of these evolutions is carried out.FindingsOn a conceptual side, a general model of the design process is presented based on a multi‐viewpoints approach and characterised by a value system. On the practical side,...

It turned out that the question of maintaining the intelligibility of the information processed, i.e. facing the semantic change issue, was closely associated to the knowledge preservation issue as its very motivation. This orientation had a significant impact upon the nature of the research and the type of methodology that was developed at a later stage: the research was multidisciplinary and the methodology evolved toward a multi-viewpoints semiotics. However if the methods we used allow us to detect semantic changes they cannot guarantee to allow us to detect knowledge changes. The reason is that knowledge is a semiotic notion and not a semantic one. This paper is an epistemological contribution to the issue of knowledge changes.

In particular we hope that it offers a viable alternative to triadic semiotic models usually evoked to build conceptual structures and knowledge representations.

An ongoing R&D project with CNES is tackling this problem. In this paper we will present the principles of this study and some preliminary results we go t. The risk management strategy we use is a preventive one. At any moment it should be possible to confront any piece of documentation produced in a given context to another produced in an other context. Context change may be based on time or on the docum entation origin. We intend to function as "clue provider" for experts of the project. A specific methodology is proposed in order to focus on risky situations.

However in this paper we restrained the scope of the pragmatic approach to linguistic representations of action - and knowledge - which fall within the domain of Pragmatics and Linguistics of Enounciation : namely the topoi [AD83]. In short topoi are common sense rules which deal with the ordering of quantities in their respective space. To be more explicit about our intentions : ffl First we shall give enlightenments about what we mean by a pragmatic view. ffl Second we shall criticize the knowledge level approach of A. Several models of viewpoints are presented. They were applied to the study of a practical case : a space mission analysis. Then the question of the correlation of viewpoints is tackled and each viewpoints model is associated to a corresponding correlation model. We show that the concept of 'place' is worth using to answer the correlation question.
