In these markets, it is both complementing and competing with other access technologies such as asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL), wireless local area network (LAN), and third-generation (3G) mobile networks. The success of WiMAX requires the technology to reach performance and cost levels comparable or superior to these other ...

The scenarios considered reflect the point of view of both dominant operators and new entrants. Techno-economic results are presented in terms of costs and revenues from the multimedia services, net present value (NPV), cash flows and pay-back periods. The business cases presented here were studied using the tool developed by European Project ACTS 226/OPTIMUM and ACTS 364/TERA. This study evaluates financial results for different upgrade scenarios trying to provide guidelines for future broadband implementation strategies. The sensitivity of the photonic and xDSL equipment to the total investment is analysed taking into account the present value of them and their cost evolution. The significance of this equipment to the success of a business case is presented and the cost breakdown is discussed.

A Greek incumbent operator with market share 30% throughout the ten-year period of the study has been examined. The methodology and the tool developed in ACTS-TERA and IST-TONIC projects have been utilized for this case study. Initial economic conclusions have been derived, presented and discussed using key profitability factors such us Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and payback period. The techno-economic evaluation is followed by a sensitivity analysis in order to identify the impact of the most important parameters such us UMTS penetration, market share, tariff level and usage level. (NPV, IRR, Payback period)

Cost evolution curves for individual systems as well for whole FTTH WDM and TDM networks are presented. The analysis can be exploited for a fast and accurate analysis of FTTH deployment costs in dense urban, urban, and suburban areas from the technoeconomic point of view, which is of paramount importance for telecom operators, equipment vendors, regulators, and policy makers. The impact of delaying the deployments or adopting different rollout strategies is also investigated and presented. The SoS emergent behavior is further revealed using exploratory modeling. The results reveal that in all cases, the WDM solution is more expensive than TDM. The total cost for suburban areas is almost six times higher than in dense urban areas and four times than urban areas.

Latest advances in self and network-assisted positioning technologies, enable the provision of services that make use of the actual mobile user location. This paper presents the key points and considerations of a detailed approach for designing, developing and evaluating a very low-cost infrastructure, capable of providing tourism content related locationbased services. The main effort is taken into allowing the potential integration of various market and technology stakeholders into such services, thus supporting open business models, while at the same time safeguarding end-user privacy.
