The objective in determining rock stresses may, in many cases, be seen as an interactive process. The type of data needed may change, depending on at what stage an underground project is in. Further more, preliminary measurements may reveal information on the stress state that will be useful as the project advances. Central Soil and Materials Research Station (CSMRS) is a premier institution in the investigation field of rock, soil and concrete properties. In situ tests are conducted to know the properties of rock mass. As far as the stress measurement is concerned, there are four methods practiced at CSMRS viz; Flat Jack, USBM Gauge, CSIRO cell and Hydro-fracturing method. The choice of the method depends on the requirement of design. The case studies are discussed in the light of experiences gained at different projects.

Since the rock masses cannot be fabricated according to the project requirements; the properties has to be established by in-situ and laboratory investigations. The laboratory tests carried out on small samples of intact rock gives some of the parameters: they cannot compensate the in-situ investigations. In design and construction of engineering structures over or inside the rock, in-situ rock mass parameters are required viz.; deformability, shear and other strength characteristics. Of these parameters, it is important to know the deformability characteristics of the rock mass for assessing expected displacements during excavation, to check stability and also to design proper rock support measures. Deformability characteristics mainly depends on the loaded area, loading system, adapted technique and methodology by which th...

Shearing failure along weak horizontal planes either through the foundation rock or interface of concrete to rock or within the dam body may result in water retaining structures. In-situ direct shear test are conducted to evaluate the shear strength parameters viz. cohesion and friction angle. These tests should be conducted near the dam foundations. Tests can be conducted easily in the drifts whereas complicated loading arrangements are required for testing in open. It requires a trench, steel I sections, sand bags or concrete blocks providing the normal load and a reaction frame or thicjk concrete pad for applying shear force. Determination of concrete-rock (CR) interface shear strength parameters of biotite rich phyllite by direct shear tests in open trench have been discussed in the present paper. Foliation joints of parent rock are striking parallel to dam axis and dipping sub-vertically towards upstream direction. Failure interface in almost all the blocks indicate that shearing has taken place through rock mass at a plane below the probable/anticipated failure plane.

On such small tiny islands, groundwater is the only source of fresh water for the islanders. Due to the growing population on these islands, demand for fresh water is also increasing and on the other side the peculiar hydrologic, geologic and geomorphic features restrict the availability of groundwater. Therefore, a proper understanding of the groundwater condition is important in order to meet this increasing demand and also to formulate future development and management strategies. Detailed hydrogeological, geophysical and hydrochemical studies have been carried out to identify potential fresh groundwater resources and quantify vulnerable parts of Andrott Island, Union Territory of Lakshadweep. Systematic collection and analysis of hydrological, geophysical and hydrochemical data reveal that fresh groundwater is only available between 2.5 to 5.0 m depths and provide an early sign of deterioration in groundwater quality in the peripheral parts of eastern and western coasts of this island. It suggests immediate measures for arresting the deterioration in groundwater quality as well as augmentation for restoration of aquifer in some parts of the island.
