Since the introduction of cephalometry, numerous studies have established normal values for Cauca... more Since the introduction of cephalometry, numerous studies have established normal values for Caucasian populations. In Africa, most investigations have established norms and ethnic variations associated with the skeletal pattern. To date, there has been no study comparing soft tissue patterns among adolescents in the West African sub-region. The objective of this investigation was to determine and compare soft tissue patterns among 12- to 16-year-old Nigerian, Ghanaian and Senegalese adolescents, establish any gender dimorphism and compare them with published Caucasian norms. Lateral cephalometric radiographs of adolescents with a normal incisor relationship aged between 12 and 16 years from Nigeria, Ghana, and Senegal were taken under standardized conditions and traced to determine soft tissue patterns. Data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis. The total sample consisted of 165 females and 135 males with a mean age of 13·96 (1·58) years. A number of soft tissue parameters showed significant differences (P<0·05). These included comparison between males and females, and Nigerian, Ghanaian and Senegalese, including lip separation, upper lip length, upper lip exposure, Li-esthetic line, lower lip-NP, nasal tip angle, N-Pr-Pg, Pg-Ls, B-N pogonion and pogonion-mandibular angle. Differences also existed between these West African soft tissue values and published Caucasian norms, including nasolabial angle, mentolabial angle, nasal depth, nose tip, total soft tissue facial convexity and nasal depth angle. The comparative analysis of soft tissue patterns among 12- to 16-year-old adolescents from Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal demonstrated statistically significant differences in soft tissue value between these West African adolescents and published Caucasian soft tissue norms. This study provides useful data in relation to soft tissue parameters for subjects originating from the West African sub-region.

All orthodontic residents in the Nigerian residency training programs were invited to complete a survey in July 2010. Data were categorized by demographic variables and were analyzed with statistical methods including chi-square analyses. Twenty-eight of the thirty-seven orthodontic residents in Nigeria completed the survey. The most important factor influencing the decision to pursue specialty training in orthodontics was a "passion for orthodontics" (42.9 percent), followed by "intellectual stimulation/challenge" (25 percent). The decision to become an orthodontist was made by 32.1 percent of the respondents while in dental school; 35.7 percent decided after completing dental school during private practice and 14.3 percent during a dental residency, while 3.6 percent had already decided before starting their dental scho...

The decision to become an orthodontist was made by 32.1 percent of the respondents while in dental school; 35.7 percent decided after completing dental school during private practice and 14.3 percent during a dental residency, while 3.6 percent had already decided before starting their dental school studies. Eleven residents (39.3 percent) said they plan to work in a private practice environment. Only four residents indicated that they will most likely practice primarily in an academic setting, while ten were undecided. Most residents (85.7 percent) reported planning to practice in an urban setting. A passion for orthodontics was the major attraction for orthodontic residency training for most residents in Nigeria, and few residents were considering academic career choices after graduation.

Severe isolated facial injuries arising from the explosion of dry cell battery in children is ext... more Severe isolated facial injuries arising from the explosion of dry cell battery in children is extremely rare. The management of the resultant tissue devastation in a scarce resource economy can be quite challenging. We report a case of 12 year old boy who sustained extensive oral and facial blast injuries caused by shattering of a locally assembled fan as result of an explosion of four 1.5 Volts dry cell batteries. He had multiple lacerations and avulsion of facial soft tissues as well avulsion and fractures of the mandible and maxilla. There was associated oronasal communication and avulsion of the anterior teeth in the upper and lowerj aws. Serial debridement and minimal repair of soft tissue injuries as well as splinting of the mandible was done under local anaeasthesia. Fourteen months after the injuries there was complete healing of mandibular fracture and closure of the oronasal communication. However patient had perioral hypertrophic scar, microstomia and edentulism. Extensiv...
