In this school, pair-work between pupils is rarely applied (teachers mainly use classical frontal work with the whole class). In two lessons (a 1.5-hour pedagogical activity) dedicated to the development of argumentation skills, the children looked at the differences between utterance and argumentation, and learned how to base the analysis of a literary text “Skėčiai” (“Umbrellas”) by Gintare Adomaityte, with arguments. The courses took place in March 2018, and were organised in two fourth grade classes with a total of 36 students (10 and 11 years old, Vilnius). The author examines the extent to which shared problem solving plays an important role and fully meets the requirements of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (2018). The development of the argumentation skills of primary school pupils demonstrates the perception of language learning (L1) as a whole. At the same time, it covers activities to develop linguistic expressionMokytojų rengimo institutasVytauto Didžiojo universiteta

It analyses the political and practical actions taken by the Lithuanian state when, after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, schools unexpectedly received a large number of children from Ukraine who had not come of their own free will, having fled the war. This article presents how Lithuanian municipalities have acted and the decisions taken to strengthen the psychological microclimate and devise a suitable model of language education. The aim of this study was to describe the experience of different regions of Lithuania in integrating Ukrainian war refugee children into educational institutions in terms of psychological, material, and linguistic support. Semi-structured group interviews (n = 12) were carried out with municipal education department staff, the staff of pedagogical qualification centres, and school managers (n = 206) who have worked on the integration of war refugee child...

A pupil constructs the meaning of a text with the help of his own expérience and knowledge during the process of reading. Apprehension becomes easier, if a child has the possibility of discussing the content and meaning of the text with his class-mates, expressing his opinion, raising questions and answering them, that is, he has the possibility of applying different strategies of active reading. This article discuses the results of a questionnaire inquest, which aim was to analyze strategies of reading applied by teachers. Fourth-formers and their pedagogues participated in the questionnaire inquest. The inquest took place in town, district centre and village schools
Nowadays it is discussed about the significance and sense of qualitative reading in a person'... more Nowadays it is discussed about the significance and sense of qualitative reading in a person's life more and more often. The concern is that computer attracts children's attention more than a book. This is quite a topical problem, because qualitative reading (that is, adequate acceptance and comprehension of information, ability to render it and reflect on it) is one of the elements of metacognitive thinking. During the process of active reading a child constructs meanings, realizes the significance and sense of reading. Active reading develops essential person's metacognitive abilities, which ensure qualitative life in constantly changing society. Active reading can help primary school children to develop communicative competence. The content of a read text is the object, which can be discussed by pupils. They can share their experience about it, think it over, evaluate and interpret the events, characters, circumstances, background and etc, of the text

In Lithuania, as part of the 2020–2024 curriculum update and the development of general curricula, integrated education is highlighted as one of the priorities for achieving harmony between pupils’ academic achievements and the development of general competences, as well as the creation of a favourable emotional environment for pupils. This creates a strategic perspective on the content of education. However, there is a lack of research and insights into how such practices can be developed smoothly. For this reason, our research was carried out by targeting one of the Francophone institutes in southern France, which has successfully implemented an integrated education practice that enables learning for every pupil in the primary grades. The study analysed the context, i.e. the concept of the educational institu...

Comprehension of a text being read is one of such abilities, which has impact on the success and quality of learning other subjects at school. The article shares the experience of what should the standardized tasks be in order to establish Lithuanian fourth-formers' satisfactory text apprehension abilities. Detailed inventories of the above mentioned abilities and the examples of statistically significant tasks are presented here. The research was carried out in 2011 in various Lithuanian schools and was financed by the EU structural funds(the project "Creation of standardized instruments for pupils' achievements' assessment and self-assessment applied in secondary schools, the author of the article was the manager of the Lithuanian tests' for the fourth-formers creators' work group). The product of the research is the crea...
