Among group of dogs suspected to have leishmaniosis, 40.4% were seropositive in enzootic region, while in non-enzootic region seropositive were 28.9 %. This indicates primarily that the tanja.zivicnjak@gmail.com Živičnjak i sur.,SEROLOŠKI MONITORING LIŠMANIOZE PASA U HRVATSKOJ veterinarians have been well skilled in diagnostics. On the other hand, in the enzootic region 14,2% asymptomatic dogs were seropositive too. That indicates that monitoring among the whole canine population in enzootic area should be necessary in order to control this zoonosis.

Previous entomological surveys carried out in the area, revealed sand fly species of Phlebotomus genus, among which three were belonging to the Larroussius subgenus, being proven Leishmania infantum vectors. Because of the epizootiological pattern of leishmaniasis in Dalmatia, obligatory testing of all dogs exhibiting evident clinical symptoms of leishmaniasis had been decreed by Croatian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management during 2002-2005 period. During this period, efforts on serological monitoring of the asymptomatic canine population in enzootic area had been implemented. The incidence rate of seropositive dogs had decreased during this period from 15% to 8%. In 2005 measures had been perceived by Ministry as too expensive, and in 2006 ultimately abandoned. Since then, we have been witnessing doubts, w...

In the present survey, we investigated Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia canis, Dirofilaria immitis and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato seroprevalence between three groups of dogs (asymptomatic, suspected and deceased) from continental and coastal regions of Croatia with the commercial point-of-care SNAP®4Dx®Plus for VBPs. The overall prevalence for tested pathogens in dogs was 6.1% with the highest prevalence detected for Anaplasma spp. (4.5%), while the remaining pathogens were found at a prevalence of less than 1% (E. canis 0.6%, B. burgdorferi s.l. 0.4%, D. immitis 0.6%). No statistically significant differences in VBP detection between dog cohorts could be found with the exception of D. immitis in the deceased group. Interestingly, no evidence of D. immitis could be found in the hearts of dogs in this group at necropsy, however. This study provides the first data on the seroprevalence of selected VBPs between dogs of different health statuses in Croatia. The results demonstrate that serological evidence of VBPs alone or in combination with co-infections were found just as frequently in asymptomatic dogs as those with suspected or confirmed evidence of VBP disease, raising questions about the pathogenic potential of these organisms in domesticated dogs.

Five sheep flocks with rate of abortion ranging from 22% to 38% during the last-third of gestation were examined. Salmonella Abortusovis was isolated from 13 vaginal smears and two fetuses. Direct inoculation was found to be superior to pre-enrichment and enrichment in selective broth for Salmonella Abortusovis isolation. The isolates were biochemically identified, and characterized by serotyping and polymerase chain reaction based on the amplification of the IS200 sequence specific for Salmonella Abortusovis. A fragment of 900 bp was detected in all Salmonella Abortusovis isolates. The sensitivity testing of the isolates, carried out by the disk diffusion method and the determination of the minimal inhibitory concentrations, resulted in a high sensitivity to almost all antimicrobials used. Only two isolates were moderately sensitive to oxytetracycline, whereas one isolate showed resistance to streptomycin. Campylobacter fetus ssp. fetus and Listeria monocytogenes were excluded as causative agents of abortion in sheep by culture testing, and brucellosis, leptospirosis, Q fever and chlamydiosis by serological testing.

Tijekom trajanja bolesti, parazitološkim i bakteriološkim pretragama pretraženi su uzorci izmeta 21 goveda. The paper describes epizootic giardiosis as the cause of diarrhoea in young calves.
