An increasing amount of evidence implies that native microbiota is a constituent part of a health... more An increasing amount of evidence implies that native microbiota is a constituent part of a healthy urinary tract (UT), making it an ecosystem on its own. What is still not clear is whether the origin of the urinary microbial community is the indirect consequence of the more abundant gut microbiota or a more distinct separation exists between these two systems. Another area of uncertainty is the existence of a link between the shifts in UT microbial composition and both the onset and persistence of cystitis symptoms. Cystitis is one of the most common reasons for antimicrobial drugs prescriptions in primary and secondary care and an important contributor to the problem of antimicrobial resistance. Despite this fact, we still have trouble distinguishing whether the primary cause of the majority of cystitis cases is a single pathogen overgrowth or a systemic disorder affecting the entire urinary microbiota. Seawater is an environment in which numerous microorganisms have evolved, some with a great poten... more Seawater is an environment in which numerous microorganisms have evolved, some with a great potential for biotechnology. In recent years, many scientists have moved away from the assumption that the origin of life was in pools of water, and instead propose that life on Earth probably originated in accumulations of warm, nutrient-rich mud. This mud, also called peloid is a rich source of organisms that, due to their adaptation to this unique environment, produce a wide variety of primary and secondary metabolites with numerous and diverse activities, including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and immunomodulatory ones. In this research, two questions were addressed using collected samples of a peloid with demonstrated healing properties. Analizirani uzorci vina sorte Rajnski rizling iz vinogorja Plešivica-Okić proizvedeni su tijekom ... more Analizirani uzorci vina sorte Rajnski rizling iz vinogorja Plešivica-Okić proizvedeni su tijekom tri uzastopne godine (2009., 2010. i 2011.) na jednom obiteljskom gospodarstvu. Koncentracije alkohola, ukupnih i hlapljivih kiselina, ukupnog SO2 , glicerola i reducirajučih šećera u analiziranim vinima u skladu su sa zakonskim propisima. Uočen je izražen utjecaj klimatskih uvjeta na kemijski sastav analiziranih vina.

Analizirano je pet vina Škrlet proizvedenih od istoimene autohtone sorte grožđa u Volodersko-Ivan... more Analizirano je pet vina Škrlet proizvedenih od istoimene autohtone sorte grožđa u Volodersko-Ivanićgradskom vinogorju (podregija Moslavina) i Petrinjskom vinogorju (podregija Pokuplje). Primjenom standardnih metoda analize određene su koncentracije reducirajućih šećera, ukupnih kiselina, hlapljivih kiselina, ekstrakta te slobodnog, vezanog i ukupnog SO 2. Volumni udio etanola određen je primjenom dviju metoda-tekućinskom kromatografijom visoke djelotvornosti (HPLC) i plinskom kromatografijom (GC). Za određivanje udjela jabučne kiseline, mliječne kiseline i glicerola primijenjena je HPLC metoda. Većina uzoraka zadovoljila je Pravilnikom propisane kriterije za kvalitetna vina, dok je jedan odstupao s obzirom na koncentracije glicerola i ukupnih kiselina.

Summary Th e aim of this paper was to determine the enological traits of two commercial yeasts (F... more Summary Th e aim of this paper was to determine the enological traits of two commercial yeasts (Fermol Rouge® and Fermol Mediterranee®) in a small scale and to evaluate the possibility of their application in commercial production of blackberry wine. Fermentation activity was monitored by measuring CO 2 evolution and CO 2 production rate during microfermentation of blackberry juice performed at 23oC. Blackberry wines produced by two diff erent yeasts were analyzed in order to compare their composition diff erences. Fermentations were carried on to complete sugar consumption by both yeast strains. Levels of volatile acids formed by the two yeasts were signifi cantly diff erent and diff erences in concentrations of residual sugars, malic acid, lactic acid and pH-value were highly signifi cant. Sugar beet pulp (SBP) was hydrolyzed with combinations of commercially available fungal enzymes (... more Sugar beet pulp (SBP) was hydrolyzed with combinations of commercially available fungal enzymes (Ultrazym AFP-L, Viscozyme L, Pectinase and Cellulase) and wood-rotting fungi (Trametes multicolor, Sclerotium rolfsii and Neurospora crassa) lignocellulolytic enzymes. Among the tested enzymes, the plant pathogen Sclerotium rolfsii was found to be the best-performing fungus and it was chosen for further research. Current research activities were focused on the optimization of the hydrolytic process using a factorial design approach and response surface methodology (RSM). The effect of various experimental parameters and their interactions with each other was evaluated using those methods and consequently the optimum conditions were accomplished. The set-up parameters were the enzyme loads (1, 2, 3, 4 μL total enzymes / mg SBP), pH (3, 4, 5, 6, 7) and temperature (20, 30, 40, 50 oC). Using statistical design methodology, it was observed dramatically reduce of the required enzyme loads to only 2 μL total enzymes / g SBP, at the optimal pH and temperature value. Optimal parameters of hydrolytic process would apply in the further investigation of SBP hydrolysis to obtain more economical process for biofuels, biopolymers or biochemicals production.
