Handbook of Research on Socio-Cultural and Linguistic Perspectives on Language and Literacy Development

In this ethnographic study, teacher-researchers explore urban literacies as social, artistic, political, cultural, and pedagogical practices that connect different community actors, diverse texts, and local realities. Data were collected through community tours, photographs (a corpus of 387 photographs), and semi-structured interviews with graffiti artists and community inhabitants. The findings reveal that semiotic and linguistic landscapes that surround schools can be harnessed to develop critical place awareness and to recognize the audiences and purposes of multimodal texts embedded in the environments. It also leads to the recognition of multicultural and linguistic diversity that is rarely reflected in school-centered curriculum and decontextualized textbooks.

This article reports on the collaboration of two university instructors to create a trans-national model of learning in the context of the covid-19 pandemic. By virtue of this collaboration, the efl students based at a large public university in Colombia were engaged in four online sessions and paired with teacher candidates taking an esl endorsement course in the United States. This online collaboration afforded the Colombian efl students an authentic opportunity to practice their English learning and the us teacher candidates a meaningful context in which to conduct authentic language assessments. Using interview and questionnaire data, this qualitative case study explored the experiences of the efl students. The data demonstrate that online exchanges can afford students meaningful opportunities for langua...

These network influences could directly impact on how neuronal groups interact together, organizing for different contexts. The cerebellar cortex harbors a variety of such local circuit rhythms, from the rhythms in the cerebellar cortex per se, or those dictated from important afferents. We present here certain cerebellar oscillatory phenomena that have been recorded in rodents and primates. Those take place in a range of frequencies: from the more known oscillations in the 4–25 Hz band, such as the olivocerebellar oscillatory activity and the granule cell layer oscillations, to the more recently reported slow (<1Hz oscillations), and the fast (>150Hz) activity in the Purkinje cell layer. Many of these oscillations appear spontaneously in the circuits, and are modulated by behavioral imperatives. We review here how those oscillations are recorded, some o...

Our purpose is to investigate the educational potential of local literacies as resources for learning and teaching in a school in La Candelaria. Drawing from a critical literacy perspective and a pedagogy of place, this study regards the notion of place as the context that allows perceiving social, linguistic, and cultural realities. Therefore, exploring the local literacy practices of the school and its neighborhood as places we occupy every day, becomes the starting point to connect schools, curricula, and students’ communities. This study employs a qualitative design that follows the principles of ethnography of place, utilizing observation, field notes, interviews, field work, and photographs to...

The optimization of a quality percentile is embraced as driving criterion for tackling designs processes in th e face of uncertainty. The use of statistical hypothesis test is introduced as an additional safety le v l for ensuring good convergence. Several confidence levels are considered and tested with respect to different parameters settings for the optimizer and the Monte Carlo simulation strategy. Two acade mical functions and the design of a two-bars truss are used to analyze the behavior of the optimization algorithm.

While there is a distinct difference between both types, most optimization algorithms treat them the same. This paper introduces an alternative way to handle imprecise, interval-valued objective functions, namely imprecision-propagating MOEAs. Hypervolume metrics and imprecision measures are extended to imprecise Pareto sets. The performance of the new approach is experimentally compared to a standard distribution-assuming MOEA.

A particular emphasis has been placed on how these oscillations could be modulated by movement and certain neuropathological manifestations. Many of those oscillations could have a definite impact on the way information is processed in the cerebellum and how it interacts with other structures in a variety of contexts.
