Modifiable risk factors are responsible for almost 50 % of cases and this could imply a huge potential of preventability. Among these factors the level of physical activity is of paramount importance. Physical activity has a positive impact on health status in general and it decreases the prevalence of various cancers including colorectal cancer. Physical activity decreases the prevalence of benign colorectal adenomas and it prolongs the disease free interval after surgery in colorectal cancer, thus increasing survival. The mechanisms involved are multiple: decreasing bowel transit time, regulating energy balance, decreasing peripheral insulin resistance, decreasing hyperinsulinism, antiinflamatory effects, increasing vitamin D production.

Parathyroid glands participate to calcium level regulations by producing the parathormone as a response to hypocalcemia. Hyperparathyroidism is defined as the excess secretion of the parathormone. MATERIAL AND METHOD We present the case of 48 year-old women, admitted with intense bone pain, headache and dizziness. Imaging studies performed identified a small nodule localized in the anterior mediastinum. This nodule was positive for high levels of tracer fixation. Surgery was performed and the nodule was identified as a small parathyroid adenoma. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS The outcome of the surgical intervention was favorable, without any postoperative complications. We suggest for the imaging diagnostic procedure to include: ultrasonography, scintigraphy, computed tomography, MRI. Using nuclear medicine, the sensibility for the ...

This zoonosis was first reported in ancient times (Hippocrates, fourth century BC); Rudolphi (1808) first used the term hydatid cyst to describe echinococcosis in humans. Currently, it is considered one of the main parasitoses affecting animals bred for income and one of the most important parasitic zoonoses. It has a wide geographic distribution and human might be infected incidentally as intermediate hosts in the parasite's life cycle. We present the case of a 25 year-old girl referred to our unit with non-productive cough, dull chest pain and fever for the past few weeks. Examination revealed a patient with tachypnea and fever. After several investigations, multiple hydatidosis was identified and the proposed course of treatment was first surgery, followed by medical treatment. The surgical intervention was performed through a left axillary thoracotomy. Cystic hydatid d...

This malformation is increasing its effects with the aging process and has its peak during teenage, when the clinical symptoms become more acute and psychological effects are really important. Across the course of time many treatment techniques have been proposed, among which conservative or surgical correction techniques. The minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum, "Nuss technique", developed after 1987, is the most frequently performed technique world wide. This article analyzes 52 patients, admitted to the University Emergency Military Hospital "Carol Davila" - Thoracic Surgery Department, diagnosed, investigated and surgically treated according to Nuss procedure. Therapeutic and diagnostic protocols will be presented and analyzed: clinical and paraclinical evaluation, indications and contraindications of Nuss procedure, as well as possible intraoperative and postopera...

Pleural effusions appear when the liquid production rate overpasses the absorption rate with a greater amount of liquid inside the pleural cavity. Between January 1998 to December 2008 we conducted a study in order to establish the adequate surgical treatment for MPEs. Effective control of a recurrent malignant pleural effusion can greatly improve the quality of life of the cancer patient. The present review collects and examines the clinical results of minimally invasive techniques designed to treat this problem. Patients with MPEs were studied according to several criteria. In our study we observed the superiority of intraoperative talc poudrage, probably due to a more uniform distribution of talc particles over the pleural surface. Minimal pleurotomy with thoracic drainage and instillation of a talc suspension is also a safe and effective technique and should be employed when there are contraindic...

Clinically, its manifestations range from isolated bone lesions to multisystem disease. The authors present the case of 37 years old male, first diagnosed with Pulmonary LCH (PLCH) 9 years before current admission in thoracic surgery department, with left recurrent pneumothorax. The appropriate surgical resolution for this patient is thoracoscopic surgery with pleuro-pulmonary symphysis, resulting complete lung expansion. This procedure results in a significantly lower occurrence of subsequent same side pneumothorax, thus being the best choice for these patients.
