It works by allowing participants to create pair-wise payment channels that can then be aggregated to form a network. This network enables participants to send payments to other participants by routing them through mutual connections. The creation of channels and the routing procedure is defined by a protocol that uses cryptography to guarantee payment accuracy, security, and privacy. Nonetheless, for payments to be fast, it is desirable that channels are created in a way that reduces the average number of ‘hops’ between any two participants, and in doing so the network should not become too dependent on ‘hubs’ that centralize multiple connections. Given that the Network is open, the way individuals connect is determined by their incentives, the rules defined by the protocol, and the capabilities and information provided by the n...

Objective: To measure the effects of dry needling to the lumbar multifidus (MF) muscle for any change in resting and contracted thickness of the transversus abdominis (TrA) muscle as well as symptoms and disability in individuals with low back pain (LBP). Background: Recent studies have demonstrated that individuals with LBP have diminished co-activation of the lumbar MF and TrA muscles, which when working appropriately in healthy individuals, contributes to spinal stability and function. A significant change in the resting and contracted thickness of TrA has been found with dry needling to the lumbar MF in healthy subjects, but this has yet to be studied in individuals with low back pain. Methods: Thirty adults with LBP were randomly assigned to receive dry needling intervention or a sham needling intervention to the lumbar MF. The participants received instruction on the deep corset contraction (DCC) for purposes...

However, it also contributes to a range of serious environmental problems, including the climate changing emissions, acidification of natural environments and eutrophication. Since in different parts of Europe animal production is highly concentrated in certain areas, it is very important to accurately determine the gas release of the major air pollutants emitted from animal waste (i.e. ammonia, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide) in order to ensure a safe workplace as well as to reduce the emission of these gases. Gas release behaviours of ammonia, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide were studied when the slurry was disturbed. In a farm there are many disturbances which can affect the emission of these gases. This study focuses in the slurry addition disturbance, which tries to simulate the pig’s behaviour. That means that the slurry addition was performed randomly in space and time. Two types of slurry were studied: one from slaughtering pigs (30-95 kg) and the other from small pigs up to about 30 kg. Ammonia emissions showed a decrease right after performing each addition, followed by an increase while carbon dioxide emissions show an immediate increase followed by a sharp decrease. Hydrogen sulphide emissions were much higher during disturbances, showing an unpredictable pattern release. It was also investigated how the pH was affected by the slurry addition and how it changes during time by measuring the pH in the surface layers (at a depth of 0.5-1cm) and in the inner layers (at a depth of 4 and 6 cm). The results show an increase of the pH after disturbances and the formation of a pH gradient from deeper to top layers.

Discharges were carried out applying a voltage of 104 V between the electrodes. Materials used as cathodes were Ti, Zr, Ni, Cu, Mo, and W. The cathodes' morphology after the discharge production was studied using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. Ti and Zr presented the highest erosion. Moreover, circular craters on Ni and Mo cathodes were observed and a region of the Zr cathode, with high erosion and a high quantity of craters was analyzed. The discharge voltage for each material was measured, obtaining arc voltage values. Finally, relationships between arc voltages and some material characteristics such as the melting point and the boiling point were observed, presenting an exponential tendency.

The results show that co-irradiated (or pre-irradiated) [ 3H] tryptophan binds to purified DNA as assayed by trichloroacetic acid co-precipitation of DNA and 3H counts on cellulose filters. This was supported by co-sedimentation of DNA and 3H photoproduct(s) on CsCl gradients. Hot trichloroacetic acid extraction or enzymatic digestion of DNA prevents filter binding. The binding is most efficient when tryptophan and DNA are co-irradiated. Under these conditions, binding is more efficient with denatured rather than native DNA. From kinetic studies, the binding is DNA-dependent at constant doses of near-ultraviolet light. At a dose of 2.16 * 10" ergs-mme2 we estimate that 100-500 L-[ 3H] tryptophan equivalents are bound per E. coli genome equivalent. The binding does not occur with another aromatic amino acid such as tyrosine.

Although the etiology of CXPA remains unclear, the role of some tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes in CXPA is well known, however other genes still need to be studied. Material and methods An uncommon case of CXPA involving the upper lip is presented, which was analyzed by a panel of genes (the most are tumor suppressor) by multiplex ligation dependent-probe amplification (MLPA). Results A 69-year-old male was submitted to surgical resection of a mass in the mucous of the upper lip histologically diagnosed as CXPA. The patient is free of disease after 30 months postoperatively. From all of the genes investigated in this study, a loss of copy number was detected for BCL2, CASP8, CD44, CDH1, DAPK1, ESR1, RASSF1 , and TP73 . Immunohistochemical reactions for the validation of some of these results showed negativity for CD44, Bcl-2, RASSF1 and p73. Conclusion A loss of copy number of the genes CD44, BCL-2, RASSF1 , and TP73 , may contribute with the formations of CXPAs. The genomic findings this case may be compared to malignant tumors of other sites aiming a better understanding of the carcinogenesis process.

Twelve laboratory experiments to evaluate the egestion in short time periods at the herbivorous copepod Eucalanus subtenuis, were carried out with the aim to obtain data about the morphometry, volume, faeces production rate and coprophagy index, as well as to detect some feeding strategy. Two feeding treatments with different phytoplankton size classes (measured as chlorophyll a concentration) were applied to the copepod: 0-25 µm (pico and nanophytoplankton) and 25-85 µm (microphytoplankton). The food source was obtained from the surface water in the Caribbean central coast region, between February and May 2001. At copepods with mean total size of 1855.45 +/-20.50 µm, faeces length fluctuated between 66.66 and 315 µm, being longer when copepods fed with smaller phytoplankton size. The faeces diameter ranged from 12.5 to 58.3 µm and the volume from 1.3x10 4 and 6.3x10 5 µm 3. The egested faeces fluctuated between 0 and 1.52 faeces cop-1 and 0 and 2.10 faeces cop-1 , for the two size feeding treatments (0-25 µm and 25-85 µm), respectively, without dependence of the phytoplankton concentration. At treatments with smaller size phytoplankton, the faeces production rate was 1.65 faeces cop-1 h-1 and 2.04 faeces cop-1 h-1 for longer size phytoplankton, without significant differences between treatments, that is, the faeces rate production doesn't depend on food concentration and size. Copepods fed with smaller size phytoplankton had a mean tolerated coprophagy index of 20.02%, while those fed with longer phytoplankton was of 36.41%, responding to a more food active search that increase the finding probability in the egestion bottle. Globally, E. subtenuis is a herbivorous species, but considering the results, could be a detritivorous copepod product of the coprophagy and a great adaptability to select and use the food.

Samples from 30 deaf probands exhibiting features suggestive of syndromic mitochondrial deafness ... more Samples from 30 deaf probands exhibiting features suggestive of syndromic mitochondrial deafness or from families with maternal transmission of deafness were selected for investigation of mutations in the mitochondrial genes MT-RNR1 and MT-TS1. Patients with mutation m.1555A>G had been previously excluded from this sample. In the MT-RNR1 gene, five probands presented the m.827A>G sequence variant, of uncertain pathogenicity. This change was also detected in 66 subjects of an unaffected control sample of 306 Brazilian individuals from various ethnic backgrounds. Given its high frequency, we consider it unlikely to have a pathogenic role on hereditary deafness. As to the MT-TS1 gene, one proband presented the previously known pathogenic m.7472insC mutation and three probands presented a novel variant, m.7462C>T, which was absent from the same control sample of 306 individuals. Because of its absence in control samples and association with family history of hearing impairment, we suggest it might be a novel pathogenic mutation.
