We sought to extend this line of cognitive research in developing economies by using data derived from small and medium sized enterprises, because the sector is a key pillar in the innovation process and economic growth. The study utilised a sample of 466 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) drawn from Kenya. Partial least square (PLS) Structural Equation Modelling was used to test the hypothesis. We found support for the hypothesised relationship, that metacognition drives innovativeness. Specifically, metacognitive experience and metacognitive awareness were found to have a positive and significant effect on innovativeness, while metacognitive knowledge was not found to have a significant relationship with innovativeness.

In Kenya, Economic Recovery Strategy (ERS) estimates that 500,000 jobs would be created annually with 88% of these generated by small and medium size enterprises. Yet, the attrition level is alarming. It has been shown that for every 100 new enterprises started in a year, 60 percent close down within the first year, and those that survive the first year, 40% are likely to close in the second year (Kenya 1998; 1999). The question that begs answers is, why so? One untested theory has been unfair competition and unethical behavior of the small and medium enterprises. This leads to low confidence, and trust and difficulties in sustaining customers as well as establishing long lasting networks. This study explores the extent to which SME’s embrace business work ethic. It seeks to answer questions as to how much the growth of SMEs is affect...

While banks have resolved to creative diversification strategies to overcome the profit compression and competition pressure, a number of questions central to this practice still linger and which this paper seeks to address. First, what is diversification in banking? Though, it is clearly defined in strategic management literature, the true meaning of diversification in banking has remained elusive. Secondly, what is the theoretical motivation behind firms and managers pursuit of diversification? Lastly, what are the avenues through which banks can execute a diversif...
