Research paper thumbnail of Coffea arabica cultivars with resistance to nematode Meloidogyne exigua originated from Costa Rica

The objective of this research was to evaluate the resistance of Coffea arabica cultivars developed in Brazil to M. exigua native from Costa Rica. The trial was carried out in Heredia, Costa Rica. A randomized complete block design with five replications was used to evaluate the cultivars Caturra, Catuaí Vermelho IAC 99, IAPAR 59, IPR 98, IPR 99, IPR 100, IPR 102, IPR 103, IPR 106 and IPR 107. The plants were grown in pots and inoculated with 2500 eggs + J2 117 d after the transplant. The evaluation was performed 209 d after the inoculation considering the number of eggs + J2 in 100 g of roots and the estimation of gall index (GI) of each plant. The reduction in the reproduction factor showed resistance for the cultivars IPR 99, IPR 100, IPR 102, IPR 103 and IPR 107. This represents a great possibility to face M. exigua of Costa Rica in a sustainable way with varieties developed in...

First, we calculated the epigenetic age of the participants based on Horvath’s epigenetic clock. DMRcate and Bumphunter were used to identify DMRs. After in silico and knowledge-based filtering of the DMRs, we performed a methylation quantitative loci (mQTL) analysis (rs708727 and rs960603).ResultsOn average, the epigenetic age was 73 years in both groups, which represents a difference of over 20 years between epigenetic and chronological age in both affected and unaffected individuals. Methylation analysis revealed 11 DMRs between groups, which contain six genes and two pseudogenes....

Research paper thumbnail of Harriet Hardy and the Workers of Los Alamos: A Campus-Community Historical Investigation

The contemporary campaign for federal legislation to compensate nuclear workers brought to the fore living retirees in whose cases of occupational illness Hardy had a role in diagnosis or case management. A third case is documented in archival records. Methods of participatory action research were used to better document the cases and strategize in light of the evidence, thereby assisting the workers with compensation claims. Medical and neuropsychological exams of the mercury case were conducted. Hardy's diary entries and memoirs were interpreted in light of medicolegal documentation and workers' recollections. Through these participatory research activities, Harriet Hardy's role and influence both inside and outside the atomic weapons complex have been elucidated. An important lesson learned is the ongoing need for a system of protective medical evaluations ...

Research paper thumbnail of A photogrammetric methodology for size measurements: application to the study of weight–shell diameter relationship in juvenile Cantareus aspersus snails

Digital photographs were taken of juvenile Cantereus aspersus snails. AutoCAD image analysis software was used for the measurements and the results were contrasted with data obtained using a digital caliper in the same snails to compare the accuracy of both methods. The snails were individually weighed and the shell diameter was measured once a week, for a total of 7 weeks. After the third week, there were no significant differences between both methods, whereas in the first 2 weeks the measurements obtained with a digital caliper scored larger diameters than the photogrammetric measurements. This is probably due to the difficulty to define the end of the shell with the caliper, whereas the photogrammetric analysis does not involve any risk for the snail. To test the reproducibility and repeatability of both methodologies seven snails were measured five times by three different examiners. Using the variance components analysis, the repeatability was 4.8% of the total variation for the photogrammetric methodology and 6.9% for the conventional methodology, while the reproducibility was 0.0% and 2.7% for the photogrammetric and conventional methodology, respectively. These findings indicate that the photogrammetric methodology can be used with confidence to measure the diameter of snail shells. The great advantage of this method is the ability to magnify the images to make more precise measurements from snails of any size, which is especially useful in the early stages of development. The growth data were used to construct a model for live weight (LW) estimation based on shell diameter. The snails showed high growth rates both in terms of shell diameter and LW. The shell diameters showed a low individual variation (16.2% CV) and were normally distributed, whereas the LWs showed greater variability (36.8% CV) and were not normally distributed. The best model for estimating LW from shell diameter in juvenile snails is the multiplicative model, with a high determination coefficient (96%).

Methods-In both case-control studies, participants were cognitively intact or demented. The Nsample (N=112) was at least age 90; the GE-sample (N=98) was at least age 65. Results-Dementia and APOE-e4 were not significantly associated in the N-sample, but were in the GE-sample. There was a significant interaction of age with APOE-e4 in the N-sample, but not in the GE-sample. Descriptively dividing the N-sample at the median (age 93) showed a group
