The sample was composed by 120 participants, divided in three groups: 40 nurses belonging the workforce of Napoleão Laureano s Hospital, 40 nurses belonging the workforce of the Maternity Frei Damião and 40 professionals from different areas paired to nurses with regard to gender, age and education. Both institutions were located in the city of João Pessoa Paraíba. The participants answered a bio-demographic questionnaire and subsequently to the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Anxiety Trace-State Inventory (IDATE) for verification of scores of anxiety and depression. The Self Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20) was used to assess the presence of psychological distress. The test for the recognition of facial expressions was performed by the presentation of pictures of facial expressions of happiness, fear, anger and sadness of different emotional intensities. The Superlab 4.0 software was used to control the presentation of facial expressions and data collection. Experimental data were analyzed by descriptive statistics to characterize the sample. ANOVAs were performed to compare groups of participants in relation to the scores of anxiety, depression, presence of psychological distress (minor mental disorders) and the recognition of facial expressions. Pearson´s correlation test was applied between the scores on the inventories of anxiety and depression and the number of the hits in the test of facial expression recognition. Statistical analysis indicated a trend of occurrence of depression among the nursing staff of Napoleão Laureano s Hospital. In relation to anxiety and minor mental disorders were not statistically significant between groups. In the test of facial expression recognition, the group of participants Napoleão Laureano s Hospital presented a lower performance on the task when compared to other groups. Statistical analysis also indicated an interaction effect between groups of participants and recognition of facial expressions. The group of nurses Maternity Frei Damião performed better in recognizing the emotion of happiness, compared with the group of professionals from Napoleão Laureano s Hospital, which shows that the proprietary institution's work can influence the decoding of facial expressions. In contrast, the specialty of oncology, of Napoleão Laureano s Hospital, seems to interact for the emergence of symptoms of depression among nursing professionals. The control group showed a greater number of hits in the recognition of facial expressions of anger compared to other groups. For the emotions of fear and sadness there were no significant differences between groups of participants. Based on these results we concluded that the specialty of the institution's work is related to the presence of symptoms of depression, which may affect recognition of facial expressions in nursing professionals. This study may serve as a basis for future research in the field of social perception and in the investigation of the non-verbal aspects of interpersonal communication.
