Various scientific views on the category of trust are examined. Attention is also paid to the socio-psychological function of trust. Trust, in turn, is the foundation of the relationship between people and a factor in the effectiveness of cooperation. Having defined gender identity, we can say which form of identification positively affects internal group trust, and therefore the effectiveness of cooperation in a sports team. The article describes what type of gender identification (masculinity, femininity, androgyny) positively affects internal group trust, and does this have any connection with the success of a sports team. Also in the article to answer our tasks: 1) conduct a theoretical analysis of foreign and domestic theories of the formation of gender identity; 2) to study the theoretical foundations of the phenomenon of trust and analyze the importance of trust as a component of inter...

Research paper thumbnail of The mental health impact of the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war 6 months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine

However, those who were directly exposed to military actions, physical violence, or severe human suffering had higher levels of anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma-related symptoms. The war experience varied by gender, age, and living conditions. Participants who stayed in Ukraine had significantly lower anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma-related symptoms compared to those who moved abroad. Anxiety, depression, stress, low resilience, and subjective satisfaction with living conditions were predictors of trauma-related symptoms, including PTSD and CPTSD.ConclusionThese findings suggest that the mental health of Ukrainians affected by the war was impacted differently depending on their level of exposure to violence and their living conditions. Additionally, the study identified several predictors of trauma-related symptoms, including PTSD and CPTSD, such as anxiety, depression, stress, low resilience, and subjective satisfaction with living conditions. Future research should further explore the relationships between trauma type, sociodemographic factors, resilience, stress, anxiety, depression, and PTSD and CPTSD to better understand the mediation mechanisms underlying these relationships and to develop effective interventions to support the well-being of Ukrainians during this difficult time.

The PsyCorona collaboration is a research project to examine processes involved in the COVID-19 p... more The PsyCorona collaboration is a research project to examine processes involved in the COVID-19 pandemic, such as behavior that curbs virus transmission, which may implicate social norms, cooperation, and self-regulation. The study also examines psychosocial consequences of physical distancing strategies and societal lockdown, such as frustration of psychological and social needs, economic stressors, relationship strains, prejudice, psychological stress, and deteriorating mental health (e.g., Brooks et al., 2020). Related consequences were observed in past epi- demics such as the 1918 flu pandemic (Dolan, 2020; Hon- igsbaum, 2019; Jeronimus, 2020). A global collaboration allows us to study the role of culture, and to make general- izable predictions on societal responses to virus infections. Culture may influence our living arrangements and how easily we adjust and cooperate at the societal level to miti- gate virus transmission. Moreover, because the evolving coronavirus pandemic has implications for ongoing psy- chological and social development, we continue to track people over time. The study was launched in March 2020, mere days after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic. We took a holistic approach to this global challenge. The study assesses virus-related and lockdown-related behavior, cognition, emotion, and moti- vation in tens of thousands of participants in dozens of countries around the world (for details, see Kreienkamp et al., 2020). The project provides the opportunity for examining individual-level processes across diverse con- texts as well as collective-level processes over time. Respondents who volunteered for the longitudinal study completed weekly follow-up assessments through mid- June, and then monthly assessments thereafter

However, research has typically examined only a small number of predictors in one, or a small number of, national contexts. Such approaches make it difficult to examine the relative importance of predictors, and risk overlooking some potentially relevant variables altogether. To overcome this limitation, the present study used machine learning to rank‐order the importance of 115 individual‐ and country‐level variables in predicting conspiracy theorizing. Data were collected from 56,072 respondents across 28 countries during the early weeks of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Echoing previous findings, important predictors at the individual level included societal discontent, paranoia, and personal struggle. Contrary to prior research, important country‐level predictors included indicators of pol...

A variety of public officials have expressed concern that policies mandating collective public he... more A variety of public officials have expressed concern that policies mandating collective public health behaviors (e.g., national/ regional “lockdown”) may result in behavioral fatigue that ultimately renders such policies ineffective. Boredom, specifically, has been singled out as one potential risk factor for non-compliance. We examined whether there was empirical evidence to support this concern during the COVID-19 pandemic in a large cross-national sample of 63,336 community respondents from 116 countries. Although boredom was higher in countries with more COVID-19 cases and countries that instituted more stringent lockdowns, such boredom did not predict longitudinal within-person decreases in social distancing behavior (or vice versa; n = 8031) in early spring and summer of 2020. Overall, we found little evidence that changes in boredom predict individual public health behaviors (handwashing, staying home, self-quarantining, avoiding crowds) over time, or that such behaviors had ...

Sociodemographic factors, traumatic experiences, anxiety, depression, and stress were assessed. The study included 706 participants, both men and women, from different age groups and living in various regions of Ukraine. The data were collected from August till October 2022.ResultsThe study found that a large portion of the Ukrainian population shows increased levels of anxiety, depression, and stress due to the war. Women were found to be more vulnerable to mental health issues than men, and younger people were found to be more resilient. Worsened financial and employment statuses predicted increased anxiety. Ukrainians who fled the conflict to other countries exhibited higher levels of anxiet...

Research paper thumbnail of Gender Gap in Parental Leave Intentions: Evidence from 37 Countries

Despite global commitments and efforts, a gender-based division of paid and unpaid work persists.... more Despite global commitments and efforts, a gender-based division of paid and unpaid work persists. To identify how psychological factors, national policies, and the broader sociocultural context contribute to this inequality, we assessed parental leave intentions in young adults (18-30 years old) planning to have children (N = 13,942; 8,880 identified as women; 5,062 identified as men) across 37 countries that varied in parental leave policies and societal gender equality. In all countries, women intended to take longer leave than men. National parental leave policies and women’s political representation partially explained cross-national variations in the gender gap. Gender gaps in leave intentions were paradoxically larger in countries with more gender-egalitarian parental leave policies (i.e., longer leave available to both fathers and mothers). Interestingly, this cross-national variation in the gender gap was driven by cross-national variations in women’s (rather than men’s) lea...

Research paper thumbnail of Ethno-cultural psychology: the science of culture, ethnicity and personality

Nowadays, there is a sufficiently large number of subjects that are engaged in the study of cultu... more Nowadays, there is a sufficiently large number of subjects that are engaged in the study of culture and aspects which are related to the adjacent disciplines. Specialists in cross-cultural psychology support methodological pluralism and usually are open to any explanation that tries to find similarities and differences in human thought and behavior. Consequently, many scholars doubt the presence of the indicated discipline and sometimes even neglect its presence since it is perceived as nothing more but a conceptual and methodological western hegemony, which generates scientific reductionism. In addition, many researchers are rather skeptical about the subject of the study. This article will reveal specificity, subject and methodological basis of ethnocultural psychology as a discipline that is separated from others framed cultural sciences and is based on the study of the aspects related to culture, fundamentally different from ethnic psychology. Described approach allows characterizing the specifics of the studied phenomena that are related to the cultural context of any kind. The convenience of the approach is placed in the presence of the clearly defined elements with the help of which it is possible to determine the connections with the cultural elements. At the same time, there are several principal differences among ethnopsychology, cross-cultural psychology, cultural psychology and ethnocultural psychology. The main differences are related to the definition of the specific object, that is why the main task of ethnocultural psychology is the study of ethnicity and personality as the main components of culture via the selection of the main procedural characteristics: norm-formation, transmission, transactions and consistency (system). Every parameter has the constructs that are common for the study of personality and culture.

Research paper thumbnail of Intentions to be Vaccinated Against COVID-19: The Role of Prosociality and Conspiracy Beliefs across 20 Countries

Health Communication, 2022

Understanding the determinants of COVID-19 vaccine uptake is important to inform policy decisions... more Understanding the determinants of COVID-19 vaccine uptake is important to inform policy decisions and plan vaccination campaigns. The aims of this research were to: (1) explore the individual-and countrylevel determinants of intentions to be vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2, and (2) examine worldwide variation in vaccination intentions. This cross-sectional online survey was conducted during the first wave of the pandemic, involving 6697 respondents across 20 countries. Results showed that 72.9% of participants reported positive intentions to be vaccinated against COVID-19, whereas 16.8% were undecided, and 10.3% reported they would not be vaccinated. At the individual level, prosociality was a significant positive predictor of vaccination intentions, whereas generic beliefs in conspiracy theories and religiosity were negative predictors. Country-level determinants, including cultural dimensions of individualism/collectivism and power distance, were not significant predictors of vaccination intentions. Altogether, this study identifies individual-level predictors that are common across multiple countries, provides further evidence on the importance of combating conspiracy theories, involving religious institutions in vaccination campaigns, and stimulating prosocial motives to encourage vaccine uptake.

However, most studies have been limited by regional sampling, which precludes the examination of behavioral consequences associated with the pandemic at a global level. Further, few studies operationalized pandemic-related stressors to enable the investigation of the impact of different types of stressors on health outcomes. This study examined the association between perceived risk of COVID-19 infection and economic burden of COVID-19 with health-promoting and health-damaging behaviors using data from the PsyCorona Study: an international, longitudinal online study of psychological and behavioral correlates of COVID-19. Analyses utilized data from 7,402 participants from 86 countries across three waves of assessment between May 16 and June 13, 2020. Participants completed self-report measures of COVID-19 infection risk, COVID-19-related economic burden, physical exercise, diet quality, cigarette smoking, sleep quality, and binge drinking. Multilevel structural equation modeling analyses showed that across three time points, perceived economic burden was associated with reduced diet quality and sleep quality, as well as increased smoking. Diet quality and sleep quality were lowest among respondents who perceived high COVID-19 infection risk combined with high economic burden. Neither binge drinking nor exercise were associated with perceived COVID-19 infection risk, economic burden, or their interaction. Findings point to the value of developing interventions to address COVID-related stressors, which have an impact on health behaviors that, in turn, may influence vulnerability to COVID-19 and other health outcomes.

Using an international survey (N = 3040), we test how infection risk perception, trust in the governmental response and communications about COVID-19, conspiracy beliefs, social norms on distancing, tightness of culture, and community punishment predict various containment-related attitudes and behavior. Autoregressive analyses indicate that, at the personal level, personal hygiene behavior was predicted by personal infection risk perception. At social level, social distancing behaviors such as abstaining from face-to-face contact were predicted by perceived social norms. Support for behavioral mandates was predicted by confidence in the government and cultural tightness, whereas support for anti-lockdown protests was predicted by (lower) perceived clarity of communication about the vir...

Our study aimed to identify important predictors of this set of behaviors. Whereas social and health psychological theories suggest a limited set of predictors, machine-learning analyses can identify correlates from a larger pool of candidate predictors. We used random forests to rank 115 candidate correlates of infection-prevention behavior in 56,072 participants across 28 countries, administered in March to May 2020. The machine-learning model predicted 52% of the variance in infection-prevention behavior in a separate test sample-exceeding the performance of psychological models of health behavior. Results indicated the two most important predictors related to individuallevel injunctive norms. Illustrating how data-driven methods can complement theory, some of the most important predictors were not derived from theories of health behavior-and some theoretically derived predictors were relatively unimportant.

Research paper thumbnail of Pandemic boredom: Little evidence that lockdown-related boredom affects risky public health behaviors across 116 countries

Research paper thumbnail of COVID-19 stressors and health behaviors: A multilevel longitudinal study across 86 countries
