The organizational climate (OC) gives an overview of the perception of the working environment of... more The organizational climate (OC) gives an overview of the perception of the working environment of the organization members. This paper presents a methodology for improving human resource policies, designed to be used in construction companies. It includes an organizational climate diagnosis tool (organizational climate), especially designed for the Chilean construction industry. This methodology was developed with companies that were implementing Lean Construction in order to monitor the impacts of the implementation. Initially, through a bibliographic study the organizational climate dimensions were documented according to the existing literature. In second place, through questionnaires and interviews applied to a group of professionals, the most representative parameters of the Chilean construction industry were selected. Así es porque Luhmann no transfiere ideas de autores y teorías a su teoría de la sociedad, pero sí las reformula y revisita para darles lugar en su teoría de la sociedad como sistema de comunicación. Con esto objetivo, presentamos cómo ha sido posible a Luhmann producir la teoría de la sociedad pautada por las novedades de la teoría de sistemas de los años 60. The purpose of this text is to understand the cultural factors and changes that any organizationa... more The purpose of this text is to understand the cultural factors and changes that any organizational culture has, as well as characterizing the organizational culture of Chilean Third Sector organizations, and outlining the important changing processes that these cultures have experienced. For this reason, it starts defining what we understand as organizational culture and changes, paradoxes and contradictions that could arise, in a rigorous way.Next, the culture of three different non profit organizations aimed at giving services of general or common interest (Hogar de Cristo, Un techo para Chile y Cooperación de Ayuda al Niño Quemado COANIQUEM) is analyzed and then, the case of a significant non profit organization aimed atmembership service (Mutual de seguridad de la Cámara Chilena de la Construcción). Um die funktionale Differenzierung von Gesellschaften zu betrachten, ist es moglich – jenseits de... more Um die funktionale Differenzierung von Gesellschaften zu betrachten, ist es moglich – jenseits der Spezifikationen der Funktionen selbst – eine bestimmte Koharenz, die das Verhaltnis des Sinns von Handlungen innerhalb der Gesellschaft charakterisiert, zu abstrahieren. Das heist mit anderen Worten, dass die unterschiedlichen sozialen Funktionen durch unterschiedliche Subsysteme der Gesellschaft ausgefuhrt werden, dass jedoch Pramissen fur die Selektion von Komplexitat existieren, die all diesen Funktionen gemeinsam sind. Aus dieser Perspektive ist es schwer vorstellbar, dass soziale Subsysteme existieren, deren Selektionsstrukturen anderen Pramissen gehorchen: Ein solches Subsystem wurde nicht in eine Gesellschaft hineinpassen, ganz egal, wie komplex diese ist. Da dies jedoch nicht notwendigerweise der Fall ist und im Lauf der Geschichte Teilsysteme entstanden sind, die – ohne aufzuhoren, dem Globalsystem anzugehoren – anderen Selektionskriterien gehorchen als denen im Globalsystem vorherrschenden, mochten wir im Folgenden eine Moglichkeit zum Auftreten – und zur Aufrechterhaltung – solcher Teilsysteme aufzeigen.

Communication is the foundation for social interaction and therefore society itself is based on c... more Communication is the foundation for social interaction and therefore society itself is based on communication. This means that every huge change that humanity has experienced derives from a technological discovery related to communication. As a way of studying the impact of technology in society and its power to influence human and natural environments, we propose to analyze how communication technologies have helped transform society as a whole. "Communications are the basic elements of social systems": Starting from this Luhmanian proposal and the theoretical approach of Social System's Theory, this paper offers an analysis based on the impact that communication technology has had on social development over time. Language and writing, as the first communication techniques, have been followed by a series of technologies, such as printing, telephone, radio, television, internet and cell phones, which are nowadays smarter than ever [37]. These new technologies have increased the amount of communications, making world society more complex than ever and accelerating social changes. This last observation introduces the possibility of proposing the arrival of a new era.

Paternalism is widespread in Latin America, and its diverse forms should be taken into account in the design of HR policies and management practices. The paper seeks to compare two Chilean banks and show that different forms of paternalism exist. As long as the organization is consistent with the premises it works with, productivity is not hindered by either form.Design/methodology/approachBy means of a case study two banks's contractual premises are compared. Each one represents a different set of cultural expectations for the labor contracts.FindingsPaternalistic and non paternalistic premises for labor contracts differ widely, but as long as the organization is coherent with them in its human resources policies and practices, productivity can be achieved indistinctively.Research limitations/implicationsThe cases are representative of main types o...

Despite its empirical and practical relevance it lacks adequate conceptual elaboration so that it remains an opaque real drive that cannot be managed. This paper seeks to propose some conceptual distinctions to help clarify its meaning.Design/methodology/approachUsing the social systems theory of Niklas Luhmann, paternalism is analysed as semantics which makes three main aspects visible: interests, autonomous decisions and responsibility that are seen as different sources of risk and danger for the workers. Paternalism is allegedly a protective device.FindingsPaternalism is reinforced and reproduced by distrust in the workers' capacities to make decisions on their own and it becomes a justification to keep wages low, hinder delegation and becomes an ideology that justifies gaps between productivity and compensation.Research limitations/implicationsPaternalism is difficult to operati...
