Research paper thumbnail of Fault Detection, Diagnostics, and Prognostics: Software Agent Solutions

IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, 2007

Fault diagnosis and prognosis are important tools for the reliability, availability, and survivab... more Fault diagnosis and prognosis are important tools for the reliability, availability, and survivability of navy all-electric ships (AES). Extending the fault detection and diagnosis into predictive maintenance increases the value of this technology. The traditional diagnosis can be viewed as a single diagnostic agent having a model of the component or the whole system to be diagnosed. This becomes inadequate when the components or system become large, complex, and even distributed as on navy electric ships. For such systems, the software multiagents may offer a solution. A key benefit of software agents is their ability to automatically perform complex tasks in place of human operators. After briefly reviewing traditional fault diagnosis and software agent technologies, this paper discusses how these technologies can be used to support the drastic manning reduction requirements for future navy ships. Examples are given on the existing naval applications and research on detection, diagnostic, and prognostic software agents. Current work on a multiagent system for shipboard power systems is presented as an example of system-level application.

Research paper thumbnail of Application of generalized predictive control for charging super capacitors in microgrid power systems under input constraints

In microgrids, pulsed power loads' high power-consumption challenges the generators' low generation capacity. Super capacitors were proposed to replace the generators for powering pulsed power loads. Charging super capacitor is expected to be complete rapidly without affecting the system stability. This paper takes input constraints into account for computing optimal control reference signal. This paper also applies generalized predictive control algorithm to realize robust closed-loop control in a complex microgrid power system, where precise model is hard to be built. Test results show the proposed control strategy can successfully achieve desired control effect that both system stability and rapid charging speed can be realized.

The author is himself a mechanical engineer who has steered the new institute into an explicit mission of linking engineering and social science research. Design and methodology – The chapter is a viewpoint paper. It begins with a brief history of the IESES institute and then addresses three specific policy areas: electrical grid improvements, transportation, and land use. Implications – At this time, our society needs exceptional energy policy as much or more than it needs direct technology investment. Originality – It is a tradition at Research in Experimental Economics to include an overview from scholars outside the field but with practical experience in the policy issues being addressed. This is the first time that the overview has been provided by an author whose primary training is as an engineer.

These three different web-based control structures are implemented and compared on an actual three-tank system. The objective is to enable the remote users to run the two pre-designed experiments through Internet in real time. The remote users should also be able to specify the control parameters for the experiments, watching the live video of the water height during the experiment, and getting data after the experiment to study control subjects. All three structures realize the web-based control concept under certain conditions. The live video broadcasting setup is the same for these three structures, and therefore they deliver the similar live video playback performance. Except the live video, these three structures differ very much. In terms of the data acquisition and control performance, the CGI method delivers the best performance with the shortest data acquisition period. In terms of the data communication, both LabVIEW to LabVIEW and ActiveX + DataSocket structures enable live data transfer. While LabVIEW to web browser through CGI structure can only enable the users to download the data file after experiment finishes. In terms of the implementation in real life, CGI has the widest user group. Everyone who has a web browser can have access to the web-based experiments through CGI. LabVIEW to LabVIEW control requires that the remote users have some knowledge about LabVIEW and have LabVIEW version 4.1 or above installed in his/her computer. The application area of LabVIEW to web browser control through ActiveX + DataSocket is very limited because ActiveX is a double-edged technology on Internet. In short, LabVIEW to web browser control through CGI delivers the best performance overall among these three different web-based control structures.

While strides have been made in negotiating terrains cluttered with obstacles, dealing with surface property variations has received less consideration. This work presents a leg stiffness control strategy that estimates the surface compliance and adjusts the leg stiffness in order to maintain a nominal locomotion behavior while allowing for stable transitions between surfaces of up to three orders of magnitude differences in ground compliance. Implementation of this technique with high-bandwidth variable stiffness actuators that are currently being developed will expand the range of legged robotic platforms to environments with sudden and significant changes in terrain characteristics.

Under the proposed control scheme, a fully controlled active front-end ASD acts as a local power quality conditioner in order to compensate harmonic currents as well as reactive power generated by other neighboring drives. In this way, power quality problems caused by multiple motor drives can be solved locally. The proposed solution can fully utilize the capability of the active front-end of ASDs and does not require vast replacement of conventional diode/thyristor ASD sets. Therefore, it can provide flexible and economical solutions for power quality improvement compared to other custom power devices. Simulation results verify the performance of the proposed active front-end configuration and control schemes.

The control logic is evaluated in Matlab/Simulink, and the simulation results are compared with those coming from the traditional PI control design. It is shown that the new method is superior to a PI method in both design complexity and response performance. The new method generates less oscillation and has shorter settling time.

At the completion of the project it was realized that to address the complexity of a Smart Grid with vast numbers of intelligent connected devices and systems, computational intelligence techniques must move from top-down to the lowest levels of architectures, with interactive cooperation between smart components, each with a level of autonomy. The CS-SGVP team emphasized creative thought leadership and “blue sky” thinking to identify future Smart Grid operational visions and the role of computing to achieve these visions. The CS-SGVP team developed its visions using a three-tiered approach. Architectural concepts describe Smart Grid goals and characteristics, general grid types, as well as computing concepts considered common across grid types. Functional concepts describe how the grid will operate. Technological concepts describe the roles of certain technologies within the Smart Grid. The CS-SGVP expects that over the course of many years, various visions will come to fruition.

The original algorithm in acoustic area is first introduced and then extended to current harmonic selective detection. The adaptive algorithm identifies amplitudes, phases and frequencies of fundamental and harmonic components from nonlinear load current. The identified results are used to generate control reference for power quality improvement control. The current harmonic selective feature lies in its ability to estimate any specific harmonics. The extended algorithm is fully tested both in simulation and experiment. It is also compared with traditional d-q transformation based harmonic detection method. And this method is found to have advantages such as internal frequency tracking, easy application to single phase and three phase unbalanced systems, simple and flexible. At last, an active filter application example shows the effectiveness of this proposed adaptive method in power quality application.

The control scheme includes two functional modules such as a current harmonic cancellation module and a reactive power compensation module. The current harmonic cancellation module is based on a multiple adaptive feed-forward cancellation algorithm for selective current harmonic identification. The reactive power compensation module utilizes the measured voltage and the estimated fundamental current to calculate reactive power. After the above information has been calculated, the corrective current reference signals can be generated for the active filter. In this way, the two control functions are integrated together so that one active filter can accomplish two functions simultaneously. Simulation results under different operating conditions demonstrate that the proposed control scheme can successfully cancel harmonic current and compensate reactive power at the point of common coupling.
