Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation, 2004

One hundred and ninety six researchers participated in the survey completing an on-line questionnaire. The questionnaire had three distinct sections, a classification of research domains, a classification of models, and an inquiry into software requirements for designing simulation platforms. The survey results allowed us to disambiguate the variety of scientific goals and modus operandi of researchers with a reasonable level of detail, and to identify a classification of agent-based models used in simulation. In particular, in the interdisciplinary context of social-scientific modelling, agentbased computational modelling and computer engineering, we analyse the extent to which these paradigmatic models seem to be mutually instrumental in the field. We expect that our proposal may improve the viability of submitting, explaining and comparing agent-based simulations in articles, which is an important methodological requirement to consolidate the field. We also expect that it will motivate other proposals that could further validate, extend or change ours, in order to refine the classification with more types of models.

It details several parameter sweeps and experiments done to characterise an agent-based model created for the purpose of exploring the role of communication strategies and topology in determining the transformation of cultural systems. It characterises systems in terms of the stantardised entropy (HRel) of "local prototypes" (LP) - here understood as vectors of probabilities of interpretation of certain categories - as well as the convergence of these LP to the "Global Prototypes" (GP), using a simple ratio of the two Hrel (CL).

This short paper introduces a hypothesis complementary to the current logic of replicating computerized models in social simulations. It is submitted that the logic of cumulative knowledge provided by the process of peer reviewing may become more resourceful once the effort of replication becomes focused on producing multiple computerized versions of the same conceptual model before actually submitting it for peer reviewing, in contrast to the usual practice of having other teams aligning and replicating models after they have already been reviewed, accepted and published. Note that while this is a similar approach to Edmonds and Hales ’ proposal, it differs from a methodological point of view, insofar as they double replicated an already published model. While this approach would require more manpower in simulation projects, it is argued here that the resulting benefits may override the costs, particularly in participative-based simulations, where potential underverified ...

Our claim is that any social principle prescribed within a level of abstraction above Newell's Knowledge Level, in order to balance the needs of the individual and the system as a whole, can not adopt an utility-oriented scale of performance but instead must adopt a substantialist-oriented (goaldriven) concept of performance. On this perspective, we propose a number of goal-generating principles for social responsible agents, towards an uncompromising individualistic view of autonomous agents that nevertheless attempt to motivate the welfare of collectives.

We give the following contributions: (i) aid the identification of general principles to develop platforms; (ii) advance the analysis and prospection of technical-operational and highlevel requirements; (iii) promote the identification of shared requirements, addressing them to the development of an integrated work. We present our reference model and make a comparative analysis between three well-known platforms, resulting in an unambiguous and schematic characterisation of computational systems for agent-based simulation.

To help you decide how to check your simulation – both against its antecedent conceptual models (verification) and external standards such as data (validation) – and in this way help you to establish the credibility of your simulation. In order to do this the chapter will point out the nature of these processes, including the variety of ways in which people seek to achieve them. Abstract Verification and validation are two important aspects of model building. Verification and validation compare models with observations and descriptions of the problem modelled, which may include other models that have been verified and validated to some level. However, the use of simulation for modelling social complexity is very diverse. Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Computer Supported Education, 2012

An intensity that makes the teaching of electronic marketing somewhat challenging and specific when compared with other disciplines. Teaching electronic marketing will only be effective if the learning environment reaches similar levels of technological intensity as the discipline itself. This suggests that electronic marketing might be particularly appropriate to the use of e-learning as a teaching instructional model. However, this carries risks and further challenges, resulting from difficulties in obtaining positive results whenever learning is supported by e-learning platforms. If one wants to achieve lower failure risks and effective and motivated learning, the e-learning model should be provided with features that strengthen it pedagogically. This paper proposes a practice field for teaching electronic marketing, embedded and tested in an e-learning platform provided with learning activities that implement a practice field.

Research paper thumbnail of E-learning design issues for high-order learning - an application and empirical study in the knowledge domain of digital marketing

International Journal of Learning Technology

In disciplines requiring high technological intensity the success of e-learning can be hampered b... more In disciplines requiring high technological intensity the success of e-learning can be hampered by a lack of pedagogical support for the intended outcomes. The design of learning activities through mediating tools (MTs) moderates this difficulty, allowing the adaptation of instructional designs so they are pedagogically appropriate to the learning outcomes. Nevertheless, the provision of methods and empirical results to help design activities and properly organise them in MTs remains a challenge. In this paper, we propose a pattern of alignment among learning outcomes, learning activities and MTs that facilitates instructional design, using pedagogical principles based on Bloom's taxonomy and problem-based learning (PBL). A framework is provided to classify, model and implement teacher-centred content into organised student-centred activities that are clustered in MTs with higher-order learning capabilities. This approach can lead to the development of a consistent instructional design, which is susceptible to evaluation, thus making it possible to test further alignments among the obtained results, the intended design characteristics and the pedagogical principles. The results confirm that high levels of Bloom's taxonomy are achieved, particularly with respect to the requirements of learning model centricity and collaborative learning.

If one wants to achieve lower failure risks and effective and motivated learning, the e-learning model should be provided with features that strengthen it pedagogically. This paper proposes a practice field for teaching electronic marketing, embedded and tested in an e-learning platform provided with learning activities that implement a practice field.
