Topical anaesthetics have been reported to cause methaemoglobinaemia. Topical benzocaine was specifically implicated in roughly 66% of anesthetic-induced methaemoglobinaemia cases in a large systematic review in adults. This complication has occurred often in adult patients with pre-existing comorbidities resulting in diminished use in children overall with only few paediatric cases reported worldwide. Additionally, there is growing evidence of a link between sepsis and methaemoglobinaemia due to increased circulating nitrous oxide from infectious pathogen metabolism. In this report, we discuss a case of a 16-year-old young boy, being evaluated for suspected endocarditis, presenting with acute methaemoglobinaemia after use of topical benzocaine spray for transesophageal echocardiogram. This case exemplifies the importance of blood gas with co-oximetry testing in all cases of refractory hypoxemia who have had procedures requiring topical anaesthetics.

Biofeedback is a non-invasive, non-pharmacologic therapeutic technique, which helps patients control stress response by deep breathing, visualization and medication. The aim of the study was to compare efficacy of conventional therapy, biofeedback and combination of pharmacotherapy with biofeedback. Methods: This is a randomized study conducted for period of 2 years from April 2020 to May 2022 in Srinivas Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre, Mukka, Surathkal. 100 patients who were diagnosed with migraine between 18 and 60 years of age were included in the study after ruling out other primary causes of headache. Patients<18 years of age >60 years of age, with known comorbidities that can precipitate headache and on treatment for any other condition were excluded from the study. They were randomly assigned to groups for receiving conventional therapy, biofeedback therapy and combination of pharma...

Here we use the deep and extensive multiwavelength data in the COSMOS field to select a complete sample of 578 infrared (IR) quasars ($L_{\rm AGN,IR}\gt 10^{45}\rm \: erg\: s^{-1}$) at z < 3, with minimal obscuration bias, using detailed UV-to-far-IR spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We complement our SED constraints with X-ray and radio observations to further investigate the properties of the sample. Overall, 322 of the IR quasars are detected by Chandra and have individual X-ray spectral constraints. From a combination of X-ray stacking and Lrm2−10rm,kevL_{\rm 2-10\rm \,kev}Lrm2−10rm,kev – Lrm6:mumL_{\rm 6\: \mu m}Lrm6:mum analyses, we show that the majority of the X-ray faint and undetected quasars are heavily obscured (many are likely Compton thick), highlighting the effectiveness of the mid-IR...

Here we present first results on part of the sample. We use a simple model to look for non-circular motions in the observed stellar velocity fields of both AGNs and inactive galaxies. Combining the luminosity profile with larger scale data, we decompose the large-scale disk, bulge and nuclear components. And with the stellar velocity dispersion, we search for the evidence of dynamically cold nuclear stellar populations distinct from the bulge, and study the nuclear K-band stellar mass to light ratios. The key goal of this study is to understand the role of nuclear star formation in the AGN fueling process.

The data cover the spectral region surrounding the broad Balmer emission lines, which enables the estimation of black hole masses (M_BH) and accretion rates (in terms of L/L_Edd). We focus on 10 AGN at z~3.3, where we observe the Hbeta spectral region, while for the other four z~2.4 sources we use the Halpha broad emission line. Compared with previous detailed studies of unobscured AGNs at these high redshifts, our sources are fainter by an order of magnitude, corresponding to number densities of order ~10^-6--10^-5 Mpc^-3. The lower AGN luminosities also allow for a robust identification of the host galaxy emission, necessary to obtain reliable intrinsic AGN luminosities, BH masses and accretion rates. We find the AGNs in our sample to be powered by supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with a typical mass of M_BH~5*10^8 M_Sol -- significantly lower...

Several studies have reported that migraine headache is more common in patients with allergy. Aim of this study is to determine if the allergic sensitization is associated with the prevalence, frequency, and disability of migraine headaches. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted during the period August 2013. During this period 100 patients of either gender who were diagnosed with migraine were selected and total serum IgE levels were estimated. Prevalence of migraine headache and degree of allergic sensitization was estimated in these patients. Severity of migraine was assessed using the MIDAS score. Statistical Analysis : Descriptive tables were generated showing the demographic and clinical characteristics of participants stratified by age and sex. Differences between subject groups were assessed by chi-square test. Correlation between severity of migraine and IgE levels was calculated using Pearson correlation.
