This paper presents the adaptation engine used in GRAPPLE, and explains why we consider it to be a truly general-purpose adaptive learning environment (ALE). In particular the paper describes how the core adaptation component (or engine) can be configured to perform any kind of adaptation to any type of XML document, and how it is designed to communicate and work with other systems, in particular with (different) LMSs.

Its development started in 1996. During 10 years of research and development different new presentation, adaptation and user modeling methods and techniques have been added, turning AHA! into a general-purpose adaptive hypermedia platform. This paper presents an overview of the design and architecture of AHA!, with parts that have been published before and with recent additions like style adaptation and a new very flexible link annotation mechanism.Unlike other adaptive hypermedia systems, AHA! is not aimed at a single application area and does not prescribe a single fixed presentation style. Creating applications, defining the user models and the adaptive behavior are all done using graphical authoring tools. End-users are presented with what looks like a normal website, and need not be aware of the adaptation that goes on behind the scenes. Their bro...

Learning Management Systems (LMSs) are used in many (educational) institutes to manage the learning process. Adaptive Learning Environments (ALEs) offer support for the learning process through adaptive guidance and perhaps also personalized learning material (content). GRAPPLE offers a new infrastructure that brings both together. This is done through single sign-on, a common User Model Framework and an (asynchronous) event bus that coordinates the communication between the other components. Authors can create structured course material and define the adaptation through a graphical interface, and a flexible and very extensible adaptation engine offers almost any type of presentation and adaptation an author might want. This chapter reports on early experience with the GRAPPLE environment, for teaching and for learning. In the past 15 years two complementary technologies have been introduced in the area of learning: Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Adaptive Learning

The aim of the this research was twofold: to make the authoring of adaptive documents feasible without much technical knowledge, and to create an adaptation and user modeling service that would allow a complete separation between content and adaptation. GALE thus consists of a Generic Adaptation Language that we briefly use in this demo, and of a Generic Adaptation Engine that is the focus of the demo.

This papers presents the overall architecture of GRAPPLE, and explains some of the main challenges in creating a truly general-purpose adaptive learning environment (ALE) that can be used with different LMSs and a distributed architecture of user modeling services. In particular the paper describes the conceptual adaptation model, its translation into adaptation rules, and some technological challenge that results from separating the concerns of adaptation and user modeling.

(See http://aha.win.tue.nl/.) Adaptation in on-line textbooks makes it possible for learners to study the textbook in different ways without encountering difficulties. Link hiding and annotation guide users towards subjects they are "ready" to study. Adaptive sequencing or sorting helps them decide on a reading order for pages that teach them about a given concept. Conditional inclusion of fragments and stretchtext make it possible to provide additional or prerequisite explanations when needed or desired. In this roundtable (paper) we discuss the authoring process for adaptive textbooks created with AHA!. We cover the different authoring tools for concepts, concept relationships (like prerequisites) and adaptive object inclusion (for additional explanations). We also cover the process of completing an appl...
