Current research on these children and a conceptual framework to understand how this violence affects their development are outlined. The implications of this research are discussed in terms of several intervention strategies. The importance of primary prevention programs in school systems is stressed.

Research paper thumbnail of Do winners pick government? How scale-up experience shapes entrepreneurs’ assessments of innovation policy mixes

Science & public policy, Jun 13, 2023

How do entrepreneurs of high-growth firms in small, open economies evaluate innovation policy mix... more How do entrepreneurs of high-growth firms in small, open economies evaluate innovation policy mixes? In response to market consolidation by large firms, governments in such countries are using a mix of innovation policy tools to support firms with high-growth potential in digitally intensive sectors. Government objectives, however, are not being realized. Bringing actor-centric perspectives to the policy mix literature, we analyze interviews with entrepreneurs from Canadian technology firms to determine whether there is a disconnect between the objectives and instruments employed by the government. With distinct policy preferences rooted in their growth experiences specific to the country's political economy, we find that scale-up entrepreneurs prefer a more active role of the government in the form of demand-side, direct, and targeted innovation instruments. The findings presented in this article provide a more nuanced understanding of the innovation policy landscape and the preferences of technology scale-up firms

Several things stand out a ter studying the growth patterns and challenges in a wide range of developed and developing countries for the past 15 years. e global economy has been a key enabler of growth, war recovery and, in particular, progress in developing countries. No one foresaw the scope of the potential for poverty and reduction and prosperity that actually occurred, when the architecture was put in place. But, in the last few decades, that architecture has had di culty keeping up with the realities. Previously small and relatively poor countries are now major players. Digital technology has vastly expanded the ability to manage complexity in global supply chains at low cost. Trade data, built on the assumption that something is produced in country A and consumed in country B, has very little to do with the reality in many sectors. And, perhaps most importantly, trade in services (broadly de ned to include intangibles and intellectual property [IP]), initially a tiny fraction of global trade, may become the dominant part in the future. While there are common ingredients across countries in successful growth recipes, there are also striking di erences. Local conditions, history, governance and path dependence make each case to some extent idiosyncratic. Unfortunately, this valid proposition is sometimes taken as a rationale for not learning from the vast array of experience of other countries. A subset of countries endowed with substantial natural resource wealth have struggled -to varying degrees of success -with the complex challenge of exploiting that wealth for the bene t of their citizens while creating a broad and diverse range of employment opportunities. vii 1 Gordon ( ) situates recent developments in information and communications technology in the larger cycle of economic progress and nds they do not match up to the impacts of ve previous great inventions -electricity, urban sanitation, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, the internal combustion engine and modern communication. Research paper thumbnail of Challenges of Coordination: Automotive Innovation in the Ontario Supply Chain in Comparative Context

Canadian Public Policy, 2017

However, these initiatives cater to a small percentage of highly innovative automotive suppliers and exclude much of the traditional manufacturing base. This stands in contrast to automotive clusters in Detroit, MI; the West Midlands, United Kingdom; and Baden-Württemberg, Germany, where applied research collaborations target the entire supply chain. With respect to policy implications, we argue that new forms of industrial coordination emerging in competitor regions may offer critical policy lessons for Ontario on how to stem the erosion of innovation capabilities in its automotive supply base.
