We also presented a major benefit from writing high performance simulations in an automated differentiation language such as Tensorflow: a single line of code enabled us to estimate sensitivities, i.e. the rate of change in price of financial instrument with respect to another input such as the interest rate, the current price of the underlying, or volatility. Such sensitivities (otherwise known as the famous financial "Greeks") are fundamental for risk assessment and risk mitigation. In the present follow-up short paper, we extend the developments exposed in our previous work about the use of Tensor Processing Units and Tensorflow for TPUs.

This method does not perform any sub-sampling, but instead optimizes over all sub-windows. MMOD can be used to improve any object detection method which is linear in the learned parameters, such as HOG or bag-of-visual-word models. Using this approach we show substantial performance gains on three publicly available datasets. Strikingly, we show that a single rigid HOG filter can outperform a state-of-the-art deformable part model on the Face Detection Data Set and Benchmark when the HOG filter is learned via MMOD.

Research paper thumbnail of Innovate Green Office: a new standard for sustainable buildings

Proceedings of the ICE - Energy, 2007

While previous exemplar sustainable buildings have been constructed for owner occupiers, this project is a demonstration of a sustainable commercial office built speculatively by a developer. The £5·5 million, 4350m2 building demonstrates a wide range of novel techniques for reducing resource consumptionand carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions both in construction and use. Featuring passive environmental design, the building eschews bolt-on sustainable technologies in favour of good insulation, thermal mass and daylight to reduce emissions of CO2 to 20%; of a conventional office building. Importantly, savings in energy and water consumption at a time of increasing volatility in energy costs also provide savings in operating cost, making the building commercially attractive.
