Research paper thumbnail of Sex And Gender Equity in Research (SAGER): reporting guidelines as a framework of innovation for an equitable approach to gender medicine. Commentary

Annali dell'Istituto superiore di sanità

Sex and gender are important determinants of health and influence research findings in a variety ... more Sex and gender are important determinants of health and influence research findings in a variety of ways, yet they are often overlooked and underreported. This oversight limits the generalizability of research findings and their applicability to clinical practice. The objective of this paper is to point out how journal editors can influence better reporting of sex and gender in research by establishing a methodological framework directly addressing authors of scientific publications, as well as referees, and indirectly affecting all the stakeholders in the research cycle, from funders to policy-makers and citizens. Such a framework is represented by the Sex And Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines, developed by the European Association of Science Editors (EASE) to encourage a more systematic approach to the reporting of sex and gender in research across disciplines. The paper includes the rationale and basic principles of the SAGER guidelines.

In 2005 the ISS launched a Project aimed at aggregating the biomedical resources (mainly scientific publications) produced by Italian research institutions. The first step was to raise OA awareness among ISS research staff. To this end and in order to track authors’ attitudes to OA issues, an internal survey was carried out to identify researchers’ opinions towards the publication and distribution of academic material, following both the traditional and OA models. The essential results of the survey will be commented on, mostly in regards to the kind of material to be deposited in the ISS digital archive. In order to comply fully with the principles of the open access movement, the President of ISS signed the "Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities". In synthesis, the open access paradigm is deeply reshaping the scholarly communication system. Researchers are becoming gradually aware of OA impact so that the number of articles published on open access journals is increasing worldwide. Further efforts have to be done to promote authors' self-archiving of scientific works in the digital repositories set up on a large scale by research and academic institutions. The traditional publishing sector keeps to claim its role as producer of "official communication" by issuing prestigious journals, but in many cases offer the auth...

The BRIF is an ongoing initiative that encompasses reflections and actions from various stakeholders (researchers, funders, industrials, editors) towards i/ standardised identification schemes and reporting for better visibility and tracing of bioresources on the web; ii/ incentive policies from hosting institutions; iii/ creation of tools allowing follow up of their use. Tracing the use of bioresource is the first step in this process and for this purpose we have published the CoBRA (Citation of BioResources in journal Articles) guideline, launched the Open Journal of Bioresources and started developing new metrics. The CoBRA guideline aims to standardise the citation of bioresources in scientific articles in order to trace their use on the web. The Open Journal of Bioresources (OJB) was created in close collaboration with the open access publisher Ubiquity Press allowing both the resources and the OJB papers to be cited, and also providing authors with tools to get metrics on reuse and impact. New better adapted metrics are being worked out in a dedicated BRIF working subgroup. A first list of relevant parameters to take into account in the impact measure of bioresources has been provided. The tools proposed here foster easier access to samples and associated data as well as their optimised use, sharing and recognition for data producers. Input from the scientific editorial community would be highly appreciated at this stage.

Health inequalities within and between Member States of the European Union are widely recognized ... more Health inequalities within and between Member States of the European Union are widely recognized as a public health problem as they determine a significant share of potentially avoidable mortality and morbidity. After years of growing awareness and increasing action taken, a large gap still exists across Europe in terms of policy responses and governance. With the aim to contribute to achieve greater equity in health outcomes, in 2018 a new Joint Action, JAHEE, (Joint Action Health Equity Europe) was funded by the third EU Health Programme, with the main goal of strengthening cooperation between participating countries and of implementing concrete actions to reduce health inequalities. The partnership led by Italy counted 24 countries, conducting actions in five policy domains: monitoring, governance, healthy living environments, health systems and migration, following a three-step implementation approach. Firstly, specific Policy Frameworks for Action (PFA) collecting the available...

It's a great honour for us to represent initiatives and priorities of ICORD in Russia. It has been important for us to insert Russia as a member of the developing global work that ICORD has been making for many years. We expect that the Russian Federation and the international community will consider and implement in practice the proposals that emerged during the work of the conference. The conference was functional to the scientific community, researchers, and the representatives of governments, business and civil society organizations, which found a suitable place to organize a constructive dialogue between them and to establish a joint solution of actual problems. I congratulate all the participants for such productive deliberations and specially recognize the political and personal support given by Mr. Aleksandr P. Torshin representative of the Federation Council and First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council, Mr. Sergey V.
